There are some costs that people are expecting when they look into working from home, and others that they are not. Some are unavoidable, such as the costs for internet connections and telephone lines and need to be considered against potential income when deciding on the feasibility of working from home.

For the majority of people who work from home, a computer is going to be an essential piece of equipment. Even if you work isn't directly tied to the computer, you will likely need a computer for other uses.

For instance, if you plan to sell items that you have personally made then you may choose to try and advertise and sell them through a website that you or another person has made for you. You will need regular access to the internet to receive the orders that will hopefully come in, to collect payment, as well as to confirm fulfillment of your orders with your clients.

This computer will need to be reliable, and sufficiently up to date that it can handle the applications that it will need to run. In the case of an at home call center job, you may need to run resource intensive software that is provided by the company that employs you, and your machine will need to be able to handle that-potentially requiring the purchase of a newer computer.

This brings us to the second most common cost-an internet connection. This is just as essential as the computer itself, as it will be used for receiving orders, placing advertisements, or applying for freelance jobs-many work at home positions will need it.

A phone line will be necessary for any at home call center or customer support job, or a job that requires you to market a product of your own via phone calls. Whilst an internet based phone (VOIP) might be suitable for the purpose, many at home call center jobs require a land based phone line, and this will come with a monthly bill.

If you plan on a sales based business, you will need to purchase your initial materials or goods. These costs should later be covered by sales but will need to be covered in larger amount at start up so that you are ready to begin. To sell your items you may need to purchase a website-with costs for both the domain name and hosting, and for someone to design and build the site if you are unable to do so yourself.

All of these costs need to be balanced against expected income, and against the fact that there is likely to be a drop in total household income, at least in the beginning. Many of these needed services and facilities may already be in place of course, and not represent a real increase in the cost of running the household, though some may need to be upgraded. Costs can sometimes be reduced by packaging phone and internet services together through the same company, where they were previously separate.

The costs associated with your at home work need not be insurmountable, and should in fact be considered an investment, without which you could not make your living from home.
