Amritsar, literally means the "holy pool of nectar", is one of the most ancient and awe-inspiring cities of India. The place is remembered for the massacre that happened during the British rule in India. 379 people died and more than 1200 people were injured in this massacre. On 13 April 1919, pilgrims had gathered there to celebrate the Baisakhi festival, and protest against the British rule. General Dyer was the Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab in 1919, who ordered the British forces to open fire on the people. It is at this place that Sita Ma gave birth to the twins Lav- Kush. Another religious place to visit is the Durgiana Mandir, located close to the Golden Temple. This temple is architecturally similar to the Golden Temple and is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Durga along with Lakshmi and Narayana.
