Yes, I will admit it. I have been dumped a number of times - by many wonderful women, in fact. This has happened more times than I care to say. Each woman seemed so special in her own way that each loss was so uniquely painful. And, even though the pain of the breakup was present each time, I must admit that I have grown from each of these experiences.

Not long ago, a friend of mine who had been dumped by his long-time girlfriend asked me, "Robbie, why do women break up with men?" Here I share with you the 5 things I have learned from the women who have dumped me:

1. It takes two people to make or break a relationship

If you are like 99% of the men out there, while in the midst of the pain of being dumped it is very easy to blame your woman for your unhappiness. Of course, in truth, if the relationship was no longer working, it is likely that you were part of the problem. So, make sure you face honestly what part you had to play in the breakup. You can leverage what you learn in your next relationship.

2. It is important to give her some space once in a while

Most women love to hug, snuggle, and generally have lots of physical contact. Women, maybe even more so than men, like to be in close proximity to their guy whenever possible. But, do not let this behavior fool you: women need their personal space, too. And, while men often take a "live and let live" attitude toward their mate, if you felt during your relationship that you might be losing her, you may have gotten a bit possessive - trying hard to keep her on a short leash out of your own insecurity. This is a mistake. If you end up getting another chance with the woman who left you: whenever you have the urge to get possessive, do the opposite and give her some space.

3. The pain will go away

Every morning you wake up to face a new day, you are likely feeling the pain of the breakup in a fresh new way. Maybe it is the first thing you think of when you open your eyes, and when you do, the pain comes rushing back in. Trust me on this one: as hard as it is to imagine right now, the pain will go away, I promise! Just hang in there a bit longer.

4. Some things are just not meant to be

Your ex is probably a wonderful person, and it is likely you feel very attracted to her romantically. You may feel in your heart of hearts that she is the right one for you. If you are feeling this way, take a moment to step back: realize, first of all, that it may just not be meant to be and there is likely something much better out there for you. Second, realize that, if it is meant to be, you will be back together again one day soon. Either way, the smart thing to do is to have a measure of acceptance for where things are now. With the acceptance will come peace.

5. Good things happen to those who help themselves

To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin: good things happen to those who help themselves. Remember that while you cannot change what has already happened, you have full control over how you react to what is going on right now. If you want to have a positive romantic future, you need to take control of your actions and your thoughts.

This means, of course, getting back on that proverbial horse. Go meet new people and have a blast. You will, I promise, find another relationship. If you follow my advice about the things I myself have learned from being dumped and moving on, you will be off to an excellent start in your new life.
