According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents or RoSPA, an average of 200,000 do it yourself enthusiasts end up in hospitals yearly in the United Kingdom. The reason for the hospital visits involve accidents with do it yourself projects.

According to RoSPA, the most common accidents include hammer-injured thumbs and nails, broken legs after falling from high ladders, and so on. The point here is that the accidents could have been prevented.

Accident-prone

In RoSPA’s belief, some things should be best left to the professionals. According to David Jenkins, a product safety adviser for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents:

"A job which involves working at height is a typical example of one where it may be better to call in a tradesperson. Ladder and stepladder accidents send a massive 40,000 people to hospital every single year, quite often resulting in the most serious injuries and even death."

“Power tools can also be a problem if instructions are not followed and protective gear not worn. People are even buying chainsaws to use in their gardens these days, yet someone using one for work would definitely need proper training."

Prepare first!

According to Jenkins, preparation is also of utmost importance:

“And don't skimp on preparation, as it can save a great deal of money and pain later on. DIY fans often made mistakes while rushing jobs when they are tired, and remember that children must always be kept well away from the work area."

As we can already cull from Jenkins’ analysis, preparation should be the top concern for all DIY enthusiasts. DIY projects should also be done when you are fully awake, and not dead tired.

Let’s face it, DIY projects can be tiring. You want to save money, which is why the labor is all yours. This is why you should do your DIY weekend projects when you have all the energy in the world to expend on the tasks at hand.

Danger in the home

Some materials that are commonly used in do it yourself projects can be hazardous if not used or stored properly.

1. Different cuts of wood, including chips and large planks- these have already caused 30,000 accidents in the UK

2. Concrete blocks- these have already caused 20,000 accidents

3. Nails- nails have caused suffering to about 15,000 individuals

4. Metal bars, metal sheets, metal plating, etc- these materials have injured more than 12,000 people

5. Bricks- old fashioned bricks, used for traditional fire places, ovens and walls have caused grief to more than 8,000 people

6. Paints- bright colors or not, these have caused more than 4,000 accidents according to RoSPA

7. Glue and other types of adhesives- believe it or not, seemingly harmless glue has caused more than 3,000 accidents and hospital visits

8. Wall tiles- sounds safe? According to RoSPA, wall tiles have caused more than 2,500 hospital visits due to cuts, etc.

9. Wallpaper- and believe it or not, some 1,500 people have succumbed to the hidden dangers of plain old wallpaper.

RoSPA wishes to remind the public also to keep all potentially hazardous chemicals such as paint thinners and their accessories in dry, elevated places.
