It used to be difficult to apply for a government grant, but the government has been making it easier over the past few years. They've brought computers and the Internet into the picture, having a federal website where individuals can look for grants that suit their needs. In most cases, grant seekers can even submit their applications online.

There's more than a thousand opportunities for grants out there, waiting for deserving applicants. The government sets aside half a trillion dollars for grants each year, so go right ahead and see if you can get your share.

How To Apply

First, find the kind of government grant that will cover your needs. You can do your own research and arrive at the kind of grant you need by the Internet. Google and www.grants.gov are your friends in this step.

Next, create a profile for your grant registration. Your information will be stored in a central computer system, which the federal government will refer to for your grant application, as well as any applications for grants you may have in the future.

Then, download the grant application form that covers the type of grant you're looking for. These grant applications are provided for by the government, and are tailor-made to suit the different kinds of grants out there. It's likely that you'll need a printer for this step, since you'll need a hard copy of the form.

Give the grant maker all the information asked for on the application form. They will in turn give you the additional information needed to process the grant request. Then submit the application forms to the government agencies involved. Take note that not all applications can be made online. There are some grant application types that require hard copies to be submitted through snail mail.

From here, you'll need to wait for the government's response to your request. Waiting periods vary, but usually hovers around two weeks. You will be contacted via email or phone. Your grant application may be accepted or denied, but most often the government will first ask for additional information. Be patient, as the process may take time.

You never have to repay a government grant. Once it is given to you, you can apply for others to increase your income. Many people have applied for multiple grants and have taken the initiative to create a steady income for themselves. All local, state, and federal governments offers grants at their respective levels. With the federal government flooding the country with the bailout package, more grants will be available than before. You will be able to pick more variety of grants, and raise the probability of receiving one. Don’t wait and sit on your duff. Apply for one as soon as you can.

If your request is not accepted, you can always reapply after a waiting period. Good luck! Remember that other people ask for grants all the time, so don't be ashamed to ask for money from the government. Grants are being given precisely to help people like us.
