One of the more effective uses of CMC or computer mediated communication is being able to locate personages. The right personages, we might add, who have the necessary skills for collaboration.

Collaboration for a project, may it be in marketing, economic trend prediction or Internet infrastructure creation is a vital yet difficult task. The overarching principle here is that most system architectures have become vital to the very existence of business and economy.

Special system architectures

According to Laurence Press, from the California State University at the Dominguez Hills:

“The architectures considered are special interest groups, centralized servers, and decentralized systems. The organizational implications are the value to organizations of people-finding systems, management incentives for individuals to participate in them, and participation in the absence of apparent incentives.”

“The deployment and improvement of people-finding and other CMC systems will bestow a marginal advantage upon cooperative individuals and organizations with cooperative cultures. As a result, CMC may marginally alter organizational and human nature, nudging us in the direction of a time when nice guys finish first.”

On data retrieval through systems

Data retrieval is proving to be one of the most vital and core components of computing and business. No other function has proven to be as important as information storage and its systematic retrieval.

Even back in 1989, Cuadra had been able to locate and annotate over two thousand databases that have been online. The geographic spatial coordinates have been found to be both local and international.

Transactions using CMC

There is but one important type of computer mediation mode of communication that has spawned literally a new culture of finding people you need: the electronic mail.

Laurence Press explains in a more detailed manner:

“We can consider two types of CMC transaction: mail messages for a specific person and queries in which you are trying to meet a previously unknown person with skills or knowledge you need. In the former case, you may or may not know the email address of
the person you wish to communicate with.”

“If you do not, the Internet has several systems for finding addresses. If the person's name and host are known, the Finger protocol or a message to the system postmaster may be used. If not, "white pages" services such as Whois, Knowbot, and NetFind may help.”

Organizational values

The rehashing of organization values is the consequence of newer means of finding the right people for a task at hand. Because of the lessening dependence of business on so-called “people-ware”, the autonomy is palpably felt.

On the Internet, the proliferation of vast databases for employment is one key result of this technological advancement in data retrieval and computer mediated communication.

The effect is seen immediately: the act of finding work no longer translates to long physical lines, but to online transactions mediated by large business databases.

Employers and potential employees are now encouraged to post vital information on wide retrievable databases. Upon command, criteria for possible employment are used to track down the personages that would fit the job description.
