An electoral roll, or what others call as electoral register, is a very important tool whenever an election comes near. However, those names that are not included in the electoral roll still have a chance to be registered, since the register can be updated each month, provided that the dates are from January to September. In Australia, however, the list is compiled by the Australian Electoral Commission and enrolling in electoral rolls is compulsory for anyone who is eligible to vote. Local authorities are the ones responsible for obtaining the list of registered voters in Ireland. A draft register is being published every November after house to house inquiries have been done.

There are two formats of the electoral roll, especially in the United Kingdom. The complete version can be made available for everyone if he is under a supervised inspection and accompanied with a legal right. The use of this format is limited by law. Only several institutions and groups such as credit reference agencies or political parties have access to this information. On the other hand, the other format can be made available to anyone for any purpose that they intend to use it.
