Smuggling goods in a car is both risky and stupid. If you are caught smuggling drugs, stolen goods or anything that isn't legitimate, you will be subject to both heavy fines and prison time. There are extremely heavy penalties for smuggling. If you are driving, you will want to make sure that anyone traveling with you knows that there can be no illegal substances transported.

Prohibited goods include:
Unlicensed drugs like cocaine, cannabis, amphetamines, barbiturates, heroin, LSD and MDMA or Ecstasy.
Offensive and unlicensed weapons including knives, swords, knuckle-dusters and some martial arts swords and equipment are prohibited.

Counterfeit or pirated, fake goods like illegal DVDs, fake identification materials and the like.

All in that lot of things that shouldn't be smuggled in a car include materials that require a license:
Firearms, explosives, and ammunition; which also includes fireworks where they aren't legal, gas canisters, and electric shock devices like stun guns except where legal are also prohibited.

Smuggling goods in a car can be risky if the person driving the car or the automobile looks suspicious. However, aside from entering or leaving the United States, most cars won't be searched as they travel around. This makes cars ideal for smuggling contraband.

When it comes to smuggling across state lines, there has been heated debate about whether or not it should be stopped and how to stop it at the border. Some people consider smuggling a criminal offense, but when it comes to immigrants, the debate rages. All kinds of smuggling by car goes on at the border, however, not just illegal immigrants. Things like drugs, firearms and other things are coming across the border as Mexican drug lords make millions of dollars on the drug trade in the United States.

Stopping the smuggling by car methods is hard, and while there are a host of border patrols, smugglers continue to find very creative ways to hide illegal products in the car, as well as use people as mules to carry it across the border and more. While drugs are rampant in border crossing, there is more attention given to illegal immigration these days than ever before.

Smuggling goods in cars is not new. People have been smuggling contraband as far back as when there were horse and buggy transportation. People don't like to be told what to do, and when something is deemed illegal, there will always be smuggling goods in a car, by plane and on foot. Perhaps, the most detrimental form of smuggling is drug trafficking.
Because many drugs are illegal in most parts of the world, the illegal drug trade has taken to creating cars that have specially designed compartments to hold the illegal drugs. This has caused the government to come out with drug sniffing dogs and other equipment in order to detect and arrest the criminals. While this slows down drugs from entering a country, it by no means stops it.

If there's money involved, people will find all types of creative methods to use in order to get their stuff to where they need it to be. That includes everything from drugs to people.
