Cars have long been an obsession in our country. TV shows are made around them, they are the stars of movies and there are more than enough songs that have been written about them. There is just something about having that perfect automobile that sets are world on fire. It’s kind of funny when you roll through your MP3 player, that you suddenly realize how may popular songs are actually about nothing more than taking a drive in your favorite ride. Here are just a few of that I have on my music player Drive my Car is a song by The Beatles, but if you have any sense about you, you can figure out that they are not necessarily talking about a car in this one. Never really mattered to me as the song has a little zip to it and when I first heard this in my early teens, I actually thought it was about a car. You get a little older and wiser and suddenly you realize what the mop heads were talking about. All the more reason to love it!

My music tastes were all over the place when I was growing and somehow, I could manage to listen to The Beatles and then slide right into Van Halen. I was never a big Sammy Hagar fan, but when he took over for Diamond Dave, I tolerated him. I actually went to a live concert of his when he was playing at a local venue for the free tequila and to hear some of the Van Halen tunes that were on his play list. I was pleasantly surprised with the live version of I Cant Drive 55 and while I am still not a really big fan of his, the toes tap a little bit when this pedal to the medal rock anthem hits the airwaves.

No car song list would be complete with Low Rider. If there is ever a song that makes every closet air guitarist show their stuff, this is the one. You are guaranteed to have everyone jamming when this 70’s classic gets put up on the jukebox.

Sometimes you have to take it on the chin when you are trying to hook up with the ladies and did exactly that it attending a Prince Concert in the mid 80’s. I had to lie to my buddies as I could not own up to the fact that I bought my girl some tickets to her favorite artist, Prince, thinking she would pick one of her girlfriends to go and I could get a night out with the guys. She of course picked me and I was instantly found out the next time Little Red Corvette was on the radio and I knew all the words.

If you are talking about the 80’s and songs about cars, you absolutely have to include one of my favorite bands of the era Rush and Red Barchetta. If you have ever had the privilege of going to a Rush concert, you get to experience some of the fastest and most intense music of the day. A lot of the bands that I listened to growing up, don’t even rate for me now, but this is not one of them. This song was as intense as the Ferrari that it was named after. Wind it up and fly down the highway with this song just blasting out the windows!
