Finding things to do in the Los Angeles region might seem impossible for just one tank of gas or less. However, with a little creative thinking and motivation there are several ways to get out of the house for a day of entertainment at a low cost. One tank trips are becoming increasingly popular due to the unpredictable economy. Many people are seeking better alternatives for socializing and entertainment. L.A. already has so much to do but you have to think beyond the obvious. There is more than sunshine and shopping so get your imagination going.

Consider visiting some of the historical places within the region. The Little Red School House was built in 1882 and it still stands today for those who wish to get a glimpse into the past. This can be found off Alamo Pintado Road. Why not then go for dinner at the Ballard Inn and Restaurant? Yet another historical building, it has been voted one of the most romantic. It’s the perfect place for couples seeking a lovely night out together in celebration of an anniversary or other special occasion. The delicious menu items are always being changed up so that there is something new to sample every time you visit.

Down the same road of Alamo Pintado is Los Olivos. This small town has a ton of unique things to see and do. Visit an art gallery and admire the work of those who strive so hard to create. You can also browse one of the several boutiques that are always sure to have an original or intriguing item. It’s a great place to do gift shopping. Mattei’s Tavern can be found on the edge of town. It’s a place with a rich history that includes a “hanging tree” out front. Standing since 1886, this establishment has its own secrets and stories to discover.

If getting up close with nature sounds good to you then visit the Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park. It’s just fifty miles from downtown L.A. northbound. The rocks are fabulous with an alien-like quality that has resulted in their appearance in such shows as Star Trek. Some of the formations are too steep to climb but others are user friendly. You can stop by for a simple visit or make arrangements to participate in a horseback riding tour.

The Los Angeles area is famous for beautiful beaches that are close and low cost to visit. The Carpinteria State Beach is considered one of the best picnic spots in the entire area. Escape the busy city streets and relax beneath the sun with friends and family. It has also been called one of the world’s safest beaches so don’t hesitate to bring the kids for some fun in the sun. Bring a picnic lunch or some snack while you are there, you will get hot and thirsty.

One tank trips in and around L.A. can be some of the best trips you take. Discover places you may never have noticed otherwise. It’s a great way to be a tourist at home for low cost.
