No matter what the road conditions are like, driving should always be done with care. However, when the roads are wet and slippery it is even more important to pay attention to how you drive. It only takes a second for an accident to happen. Most accidents can be prevented with proper planning and careful driving. Driving in the rain is not all that difficult or dangerous if you know how to handle your vehicle. The main reason weather related accidents occur is because drivers do not drive their car with those conditions in mind. You must alter your driving habits in accordance with the conditions.

If the rain is really coming down then you should plan ahead to get to your destination by making more time. You may have to decrease your speed due to wet roads and visibility so make sure that you allow yourself more time to get where you’re going. Rushing around will only lead you to become neglectful and hurry unnecessarily. This puts you in danger as well as everyone else on the road. Take care to plan ahead. It’s not worth risking the alternative.

Having the right tires on your vehicle is one of the most important things that you can do when it comes to stability in harsh weather. Poor tires with little grip will be no good when driving in the rain. New tires with good tread should last you a few years and make all the difference when it comes to how your car handles in the rain. It’s an investment for your car that is both essential and worth every penny. Safety is vital to your driving experience. It should never be compromised for anything.

When you approach an intersection or prepare to make a turn, slow down in advance. It can be difficult to stop if you wait too late to apply the brakes. You risk sliding right past your turn off or hydroplaning. Start decreasing your speed before you reach your turn so that you don’t slide off the road. Since you should not be driving overly fast, this shouldn’t be a problem. Reducing your speed is important. You may not be able to do the speed limit if the rain is coming down hard. Go only as fast as it’s safe to do so.

Don’t use cruise control when you are driving in the rain. It can actually increase your likelihood of hydroplaning which can send your vehicle flying off the road. You need to be able to control the speed easily so do it manually. You should also take care to avoid any extremely large puddles or flooded areas. If you get water into your engine the vehicle could stall. This could also lead to further complications with your vehicle as well.

Keep your headlights on the entire time that you are driving in the rain. Others need to be able to see you clearly, especially if visibility is already difficult enough. If you find that you are having trouble seeing properly then you should try to pull over safely and wait for the rain to decrease. Safety should always be your main focus when driving in the elements.
