We know she kissed a girl (and liked it), but has Katy Perry headlined her own tour? The answer is no, but that changed last weekend when the 2008 breakout star launched her first headlining tour Jan. 23 at the Showbox in Seattle. The provocative pop singer is slated to take the stage at the 51st annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 8 as part of the My Grammy Moment promotion in which a lucky fan will get to perform alongside Perry in the telecast, but then she will resume her tour. Katy Perry will perform at theaters with 1,000- to 2,000-seat capacities and will wrap up her tour with 11 shows in Europe, including a handful of shows in the U.K. and Japan. Despite their small size, Perry told http://Billboard.com that her shows will still impress: “I have the guy who creates stages for Madonna working on this tour. I’m indulging my obsession with fruit and cats and designing all different outfits.” Perry’s headlining tour was produced in conjunction with Creative Artist Agency and Mitch Rose, who worked specifically on the pop tart’s tour, revealed, “Our philosophy has always been to sell places out. We set the ticket prices at $18-20 for most markets, because we wanted to ensure a sellout. We could have charged more and we know we’re leaving money on the table, but making sure the rooms were packed was our first priority.” If Rose is right you’d better get your Katy Perry tickets before they’re all gone!

As hard as it may be to believe, Katy Perry got her start as a Christian artist. The Santa Barbara, CA native is the daughter of two pastors and secular music was strictly prohibited in their household, although Perry managed to fall in love with artists like Alanis Morissette and Freddie Mercury (she heard Queen at a slumber party.) In 2001 Katy Perry released an eponymous Christian album under the name Katy Hudson but soon abandoned the genre in favor of pop, working with hitmaker Glen Ballard, who worked on Alanis Morissette’s hit album Jagged Little Pill in 1995. In 2004 Perry appeared in an article in Blender magazine in which she was hailed “The Next Big Thing!,” but it would be three more years before she would ink a recording deal with Columbia (during that time she also worked with Grammy-nominated production/songwriting team the Matrix on a shelved project.)

The former Christian artist generated industry buzz and controversy with her debut single, “UR So Gay” and its accompanying music video, but it was the follow-up “I Kissed a Girl” that made Katy Perry a star. “I Kissed a Girl” topped the charts in no less than 20 nations and its accompanying album, 2008’s cheekily titled One of the Boys, made its way into the Top 10. “Hot N Cold” became Perry’s second number one hit and the sassy, spunky pop star joined the Warped Tour in the summer of 2008 and appeared in an episode of soap opera The Young and the Restless in addition to making the tabloids due to her on-again-off-again romance with Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy.
