Governor Schwarzenegger and the members of the California State Legislature have come under fire recently for reducing the work week of state employees. California residents throughout the state are angry over what has been happening in Sacramento and insist that cutting the state workers' pay and hours is not the way to save money. The truth is that California's debt is severe and cutting two days per month out of every state worker's schedule is only a drop in the bucket of the money that the state needs to resolve its debt.

While the powers that be in Sacramento are defending their decision to allow Governor Schwarzenegger to push forward his furloughs, people throughout the state are angry at the job losses this could end up causing.

To be sure it isn't just Sacramento and the rest of California that are having problems with debt. The entire United States of America is in an economic free fall with no end in sight. Government officials are working hard to figure out how to save the country and its fifty states, but there are things that individuals can do to cut down on their spending as well. After all, don’t you want to be financially prepared if your hours or salary get cut?

Here are just a few ways that every citizen of California can save themselves and the state money.

1. Cut down on electricity use. The less electricity you use, the lower your power bill will be. When you use less power, Sacramento doesn't have to purchase as much power from out of state to keep everyone's lights on.

2. Volunteer. Volunteering uses up time that might be spent in other ways—other ways that would involve spending money. Sure, cleaning up a park might not be as much fun as spending the afternoon in front of the television set, but it cuts down on the amount of money you are spending. Volunteering also saves Sacramento (as well as other towns across the United States) money because they won't have to hire as many people to do the jobs that a Volunteer will do for free. Plus, Volunteering can be fun!

3. When you do go shopping, shop at locally owned small businesses. This helps build your local community and puts dollars into the tax pool at the same time. Local businesses will often have better sales than national chains and are more likely to cater to the specific needs of community members. When you shop at a local store, you raise the store's profit, which in turn puts money back into Sacramento and the rest of the state.

If you stop to think about it there are plenty of ways to save money and put money back into the state's budget. The Sacramento-based state legislature understands that California is a big state. If every Californian does their part, the state's debt should be under control in a few years!
