A house cleaning business is one of the simplest types of cleaning service businesses to start, in part because of the low startup funding (and work) requirements that these businesses involve. The process is quite simple, and can easily be broken into three easy steps that virtually anyone can follow. You don't have to be an expert marketer or have a business degree. You just have to have a willingness to work hard, and some basic information to help you on your way. In this article we'll cover some simple steps you can take that will get you off on the right foot.

Step 1: Choose a market. With a house cleaning business, this means choosing the area you want to clean in. If you can keep your cleaning efforts in a condensed area that is closer to your home it will help to keep costs under control so you should take this into consideration.

You also want to think about the KIND of house you want to clean. As strange as it may sound, the houses you are looking for aren't necessarily the "dirty" ones. If you're starting a house cleaning business, believe me--you want customers with CLEAN houses.

Basically you need to pick houses and neighborhoods where A.) The types of people live who would want cleaning services (i.e. busy parents with multiple jobs and incomes, etc.), and B.) you won't mind driving to and spending time in on a daily or weekly basis.

Step 2: Get your first customer. In other words, start marketing your business! It might seem strange that this is step number 2, but it really is important to do this before going any further. This means don't buy cleaning supplies, don't get business cards printed... don't worry about the details yet. The most important thing you can do at this stage is get money coming in. It will give you morale, momentum, and the necessary funding to GROW your business when the time comes.

Getting your first customer may be as simple as putting some flyers on doors or making some phone calls. You could also start with asking around with family and friends in the area. It doesn't have to be complicated or feel "professional". The goal right now is just to get your first customer and get some income, and then worry about everything else. Even cleaning supplies can usually wait, so don't fret, and focus on marketing.

Step 3: Once you have your first customer, NOW is the time to get whatever minimal cleaning supplies you need for THAT customer, and start cleaning. It would be a good idea to get a book on cleaning or running your cleaning business to help you with any logistical issues that may come up. Your goal now is to make your new customer as HAPPY as possible and then start working towards growing and getting more customers.

As you can probably see, we've made this really simple. It's not rocket science, and virtually anyone can do it. It may not be easy and it may take time to get your first customer and get some momentum built, but if you stick to it and work at it, the payoff in the end (namely, your FREEDOM) is well worth the time in the trenches.
