The Grammy Awards are to be held on Feb. 8, but two days prior to the glitz and glamour the man of the evening will be the one and only Neil Diamond. Diamond was named the 2009 MusiCares Person of the Year, and the legendary vocalist will be honored for the recognition Feb. 6 at the Grammy Week gala dinner and concert.

Six-time Grammy Award winners the Foo Fighters may seem like unlikely prospects to pay tribute to this contemporary soft rock singer/songwriter, but Dave Grohl and Co. will take the lead in tackling a tribute concert chalk full of Neil Diamond classics, from “Sweet Caroline” to “I’ve Been This Way Before.” The Foo Fighters will take the stage in a Diamond-filled night alongside other music heavyweights like Josh Groban, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Kid Rock, Coldplay, the Jonas Brothers, Jennifer Hudson and more, all of whom will be performing Neil Diamond songs in the concert. This star-studded production is just one part of the night’s activities, and a charity auction will also take place the same night, featuring Diamond’s own 1956 Ford Thunderbird as one of the auctioned items, as well as a signed guitar by Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan harmonica, Janis Joplin autographed photograph and more.

The Foo Fighters haven’t been at the forefront of the music industry as long as Neil Diamond, but this Seattle-based quartet has made its time in the spotlight count. The band’s frontman Dave Grohl got his start in the music industry as the drummer for Nirvana, but he formed the basis for the Foo Fighters in 1995 following Kurt Cobain’s death. The Foo Fighters formulated their music drawing from the scraps of Nirvana’s loud rock music and heavy guitar influence, and with the help of bassist Nate Mendel, drummer William Goldsmith (both formerly of Sunny Day Real Estate) and guitarist Pat Smear, the Foo Fighters started their rise to fame in the late ‘90s, taking their moniker from a World War II secret force that researched UFOs.

Dave Grohl and his newly-gathered rock band started their famed career with the eponymously titled debut album in 1995, immediately sparking the radio-ready single “This Is a Call.” The Foo Fighters picked up steam from here, eventually scoring a platinum certification with Foo Fighters while continuing to heat up the charts with albums like 1997’s The Colour and the Shape, 1999’s There Is Nothing Left to Lose and 2002’s One by One. The Foo Fighters kept getting more and more famous with each album released, and in the early 2000s the Grammys started trickling down like a steady stream. The band picked up its first pair of Grammys in 2000 with the music video of “Learn to Fly” and the album There is Nothing Left to Lose, and the post-grunge rockers picked up another in 2002 with “All My Life.” Since then, the Foo Fighters have cleaned up at the Grammys three more times (in 2003 with One by One and 2007 with Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace and “The Pretender”) also spending copious amounts of time on the road with vivacious live performances.
