You might think that a "down economy" would be the worst time to start a business. You might also think that it would be especially bad for a cleaning business because when things get tight, the cleaning service is often one area people look at to cut back. While these are common and reasonable assumptions, they are basically wrong, and I'm about to explain why.

First of all, whether anyone wants to admit it or not, there are certain businesses that THRIVE when the economy goes south. Many of these businesses also need a cleaning service.

Also, when the economy is bad life usually still "goes on". People are still busy, parents may be stretched even further working multiple jobs and taking up profitable side-ventures in order to provide for their families. When people are stretched in this manner, it's extremely difficult for them to keep up with the house work--which is where you would come in.

Here are a couple of tips for starting a cleaning business at the time when everyone around you will probably tell you not to:

1. Don't listen to everyone around you. After you read this, you'll have the info you need to prove them wrong... so don't worry about what they say.

2. Take advantage of the fact that people will be "cutting back". Here's how this works: since you are just starting out with basically nothing (and nothing to lose), you probably expect to do the work yourself, and you can get away with working for as little as your current hourly wage if it means getting a little business to help fund your marketing. So you are in a unique place where you can offer insanely cheap prices that basically cover your time and materials and offer businesses and homes a cheaper "alternative" to their current (expensive) cleaning service. You can run ads that say things like "paying too much for your cleaning service?" to generate interest in your new low cost services. While you can't offer extremely low prices to every customer indefinitely, if it helps you get off your feet and get your first few customers, it can be well worth it in the end.

3. Target other new businesses in your area. Even though it's a "bad time" to start a new business, other people will no-doubt be doing it too. As you see new offices and businesses popping up in your area, approach them about your services.

4. If you plan to start a house cleaning business, focus heavily on word-of-mouth advertising and referral programs/discounts. Basically, if you can find people who are able to afford your services, there's a good chance they'll have friends/aquaintences that will also be able to afford your services.

These are just some basic tips and of course not hard and fast rules. The more ideas you have with you going into your business startup, the better off you will be. With the tips in this article you should now be better equipped to start a cleaning business of your own, regardless of the current state of the economy.
