If you've got a patio bar or outdoor bar, then patio bar stools are the perfect complements to your bar. They'll turn a simple bar into an inviting space for entertaining and add much needed seating for parties or smaller gatherings. However, it's important to choose your stools and other seating carefully to ensure that they're durable and attractive.

Patio Bar Stool Styles

Patio bar stools come in two main styles: backless and with backs. Either can be a good option depending on your bar and other needs. If you just want a stool to belly up to a small bar, then a backless style might be perfect. These stools may or may not have swivels, but they usually have footrests. They don't block the view of the bar and are great for short stints of sitting.

If you have a larger bar, or a bar with a built-in barbecue and dining area, then a bar stool with a back may be preferable. The backs provide support, which makes them easier to sit on while eating, and are more comfortable while sitting for longer periods.

Popular Patio Bar Stool Materials

The materials that the patio bar stools are made of are a primary concern when choosing your stools. Stools generally come in metal, wood, or plastic. Each has advantages and disadvantages. When making your choice, consider the weather and temperature in your region, as well as how much use you plan to get out of your stools. The stools should also complement the décor of your yard, the style of your home, and any other patio furniture.

Metal Patio Bar Stools

Metal bar stools are generally constructed of iron, stainless steel, or aluminum. Avoid other metals because they may not be as durable, waterproof, or stain resistant as these three. Metal stools can often be left out year round, except in very wet climates. In most cases, the stools will be more comfortable if you add removable cushions. Cushions should be removed in the fall or during heavy summer storms, and stored in a dry place.

Wood Stools

If you choose wood stools, look for cedar, teak, or pressure-treated pine. All three offer long-term durability and are often waterproof. They're also quite attractive. If you have Adirondack patio chairs or other wooden patio chairs, then wooden stools would complement the total look of your yard. In most climates, wood bar stools can be left outside during the summer and part of the fall. You may want to bring them in for very heavy summer storms. You should store them somewhere dry during the wet, cold months to prevent splintering and excess wear.

Plastic Stools

Molded plastic stools are affordable and weatherproof, but are less durable than other options and are often unattractive. If you live in a very hot region, the stools may not last more than one or two seasons because heat and light quickly degrade plastic. Plastic stools should also be stored in winter to prevent damage from extreme cold.

Whichever type of bar stools you choose, make sure they match your home, your yard, and your lifestyle. Although it's tempting to buy cheap stools, you'll get more enjoyment and use out of stools designed for durability.

Barstool covers can also protect your barstools when they're stored in your garage or shed. Even when they're protected indoors, the elements can still get to them. Sheds and garages aren't very insulated and let dirty and dust in through cracks and crevices. Covering your barstools when you store them will ensure that when you take them out next summer, they'll still be in perfect condition.
