The sight and smell of a new carpet can boost the feel of any home, but how do you maintain your new carpet so it retains its appeal?

There really are some simple aftercare tips you can follow to not only maintain your carpets, but to also keep it appearing fresh and new for much longer than you would think.

Regular Maintenance

Carpets should be vacuumed regularly. A general rule should be to vacuum at least twice a week and up to three times a week if you have had company or if you feel extra foot traffic may have brought in more dirt and dust than usual.

It is important to be sure any loose particles of dirt are removed from your carpets on a regular basis to avoid them acting as an abrasive and either discolouring or damaging your carpet's pile.

Always be sure you have sturdy doormats at every entrance to your home so that the amount of dirt and grit bought into the house is minimized.

Cleaning

No matter how careful we are accidents still and will happen. If you should spill anything on your carpets, be sure to see to the problem area at once. If you have a liquid spill, blot the stain immediately with absorbent cloth or paper towel. If the spill is solid or semi-solid, remove the substance and then blot the area.

Continue to blot the stain with a clean cloth soaked in warm water. Don't be tempted to rub at the carpet or you will just spread the stain further into the pile. Use a gentle dabbing action and keep cleaning your cloth to be sure you are soaking up the stain effectively.

Indentations

Heavy furnishings left in one place for lengthy periods of time may create indentations in your carpet's pile. To avoid any permanent marking in your carpets you should regularly move your furnishings and other heavy objects around to different positions. Vacuum the flattened pile and gently tease it back into an upright position using a coin.

Abrasion

Heavy traffic areas or densely concentrated areas of your home that are covered with carpet may be affected. The pile may become distorted and prematurely worn by constant wear from shoes or heels or pet claws. Any areas around frequently used furniture, such as the area in front of lounge chairs or armchairs, may also become worn and distorted.

The easiest ways to combat this kind of distortion are to either move your furnishings around occasionally or to remove shoes and wear softer soled shoes in the house. Keep pets to their beds or mats and away from carpeted areas if possible.

Treatments

If you intend to apply stain guard treatments to your carpets, take care with application as any over saturation may result in damaging your carpet's structure and integrity.

Fading

It is normal for carpets to fade when they' are near windows or exposed to long periods of sunlight. You can use sunblinds to help reduce the amount of sunlight that reaches your carpet and therefore reduce the level of fading.
