A small electrical generator can mean the difference between you having electricity and not. When the weather turns bad and power is lost it can sometimes take hours or days before you are back online. It could be imperative to you and your family to restore power as soon as possible, even if this means using a generator. There are numerous types of generators on the market. The usual home generator is going to be small and electrical, meaning it will use fuel to supply your home with electricity when needed. These small generators can also be used for other needs because they are transportable.

An electrical generator can have two types of power. There are both AC and DC generators. There are also AC and DC converters to help power the generator. Typically in the UK the DC converter is more common when it comes to the operation of the small standby generators. But how does the generator work to convert the petrol to electricity?

Inside every generator is a coil. This coil is going to generate the power that the generator produces. When you place petrol into the fuel tank, you need to prime the engine. Once the engine is primed you can turn the key and start the generator. This is when the coil is turned on. The size of the coil is going to determine the amount of power the generator produces. The coil is a cylinder which contains wire inside of it. The wire moves in a circular position creating energy. This energy is then sent to the DC converter in order to power your lights at home, the fridge, or other objects that work of off electricity.

Depending on what you want to power with the generator you will need to decide on the wattage rating you purchase. For example most small standby generators use 1 horsepower to produce an output of 230 volts AC or 12 volts DC. The max power produced will be 2 kilowatts, which equals to running a fridge and one room of lights. You can also think of it another way in that the generator can power 20 light bulbs that are 100 watts each. If the average home has 2 to 3 lights in a room, with three bedrooms and two baths, you would be able to supply power to every room. You could also consider running a fridge and television with one generator depending on the maximum volts.

The amount of power the generator produces should not be exceeded; therefore, you need a generator that will fit your needs. The small standby generators offered on the market typically produce enough power to keep your home running during a power outage, as long as you power one large device at a time. The amount of fuel a generator will hold also determines the length of use the generator can give you. The smaller generators will run for a continuous 4.5 hours to 6 hours, and typically have a 4 litre petrol tank.
