They say, ‘you are what you eat’. Truer words haven’t been said when it comes to the high glycemic foods that make up a large portion of our meals. It is important that we understand the foods we eat and the manner in which they affect the body and the way we feel and act.

Can the food you eat control the way you behave and think? Yes, it can; because it provides the body with energy and initiates changes in its functioning.

Your body reacts in a way your brain tells it to. This is of course determined by the food you eat. It is safe to be modest in what you eat; glycemic food or any other type.

The glycemic value of carbohydrates rates them according to the rate at which they convert to glucose in the body and lead to a surge in blood sugar. High glycemic foods are those with a GI of 70 and above, can affect your body in many ways.

They of course provide you a sudden source of energy and while they may be useful for athletes and weight trainers, for most of us they need to eaten with a bit understanding and planning. The rate at which the blood sugar in the body rises is dependent on several factors and not just the consumption of high glycemic foods.

It is not just the high glycemic attribute that affects the body but a combination of how the food is prepared and the ratio they are consumed with proteins and fats.

The followings are 10 high glycemic foods that should be consumed at a very minimum rate for keeping attention deficit disorder at bay:
White bread
French fries (Ketchup)
Highly refined grains
Potato chips
Soft drinks
Chocolate bars
Full fat ice cream
Whole milk
Breakfast cereals
Baked potatoes

As you get to know more about high glycemic food, you will be surprised that not all of them are junk food.

For instance watermelon, a fruit which many dieters think will help reduce their weight, is a high glycemic food.

It is important that you understand what high glycemic foods can do to your body and then figure out a way to include high glycemic foods in your diet in small doses. The manner in which high glycemic foods are prepared also affects the blood sugar in the body.

The indefinite state of emotions and its connection with blood sugar

The level of blood sugar in your body determines how it react. For instance, if the level is high, you will feel very active and vice versa. The instability in blood sugar can make you feel as if you are on an emotional roller coaster what with feeling active one minute and dull soon after. This will make the body stressful.

Food with high glycemic index will create this effect on blood sugar. It will suddenly increase the level but it won’t stay high for long as it will drop soon after.

This affects the manner in which insulin is regulated in the body. When there is sudden drop of blood sugar in your body you find it hard to focus and concentrate, you may get fidgety and hyper active as the body tries to balance off the sudden dip in blood sugar.

You can now see the affect your body will have if you consume food high in glycemic for breakfast.

The food you ate will make you feel energetic instantly but sadly this will only be for a few hours before your body experience the sudden drop of blood sugar level causing it to feel lethargic, unable to focus and restless. Your mood will be effected to and you find yourself losing your temper for no obvious reason as well as your focus degrades.

ADD/ADHD sufferer experience the same symptoms. The only answer to reducing this symptom then is to avoid high glycemic food. You can keep a balanced state of mind and emotion as well as healthy body by eating more of low gylcemic food.

Now that you know high glycemic food bad for you, you should plan your meals accordingly so that your food consumption consist of more low glycemic food. You can do this by finding out which food has high glycemic index and reducing the intake of highly refined and processed food. Go for healthier snacks such as fruits and nuts rather than chocolate bars or potato chips.

High glycemic foods should be eaten in moderation not only by diabetics and people who want to lose weight, but everyone who wants to feel and live healthy. By making simple changes to your daily meals you can change the way you feel and behave. Once you are off the emotional roller coaster that high glycemic foods put you on, you will feel better and in more control of your emotions and reactions.
