Choosing the right wall art in a home is paramount to the overall susses of the design style.

With recent innovations in digital photography the choice of pictures to decorate your home is vast. However, there are some basics which should be taken into consideration before rushing out to buy a piece of wall art and hanging it your wall.

Probably the key point, which may sound obvious, but many people overlook due to merely wanting to be fashionable, is that you should really love the art! There is no point hanging a focal point on a wall if you actually don’t enjoy looking at it!

The size of the wall art should also be given serious consideration. Big may be beautiful, but only if it creates the right visual effect. It may be more suitable to have two or three pieces positioned in close proximity to each other.

Wall art designers have taken this point into consideration, many ‘whole’ pictures are available in three or four separate parts. This can look stunning if unframed canvas style art is used. Digital photographs transposed onto canvass are ideal for creating this effect.

The style of your interior should of course be considered. If you have a more traditional style interior pictures and photographs with large ornate frames will be in keeping with the feel of the room.

With today’s interior design styles of mix and match, it is possible to use wall art which is not in keeping with the overall style of the room. However, there should be a visual connection such as the theme of the picture or the colours used.

Designers have come up with some very ingenious ways to use a combination of classical art and furniture. These are great space saving concepts for small room. Designer Kwang Hoo Lee has created a Mona Lisa art chair which demonstrates this concept wonderfully. He has used a fully framed Mona Lisa print which is hung on a wall as normal, however, take the art down and the print becomes the seat of a folding chair and the frame transforms into the legs and support. He has used the ‘deck chair’ style folding method to enable the chair to lay as flat as possible against the wall when not in use.

The Mona Lisa may not be your choice of art style, but the concept could be used with other classical or modern art designs with create effect.

If you have large rooms with an expanse of plain wall rugs can look stunning. With the wide range of sizes and patterns hanging a rug on a wall as a piece of art can create a warm ambience to a room.

Positioning the wall art is also critical. Most people advise eye level to be the most suitable, however, having art which is off set from central and hung slightly higher than eye level can make a real focal point in large rooms with high ceilings.

Unless you are intentionally opting for a cluttered look, cramming lots of pictures can look far too overpowering and confusing to the eye.

Using spot style lighting to highlight the art during the evenings or place table lamps close by so that the light supplies a new dimension to the art.
