Don't Overlook Your Offsite Optimization

As far as search engine optimization is concerned, there are two basic principles that you need to understand and make sure that you follow on a consistent basis. The first of these is on-site optimization and is basically has to do with making sure that your keyword or keyword phrase is included on the webpage. It also has to do with latent semantic indexing, where phrases that are related to your target phrase are also included on the page. This is something that most people understand and are able to do effectively but something that many people skip is their offsite optimization.

Offsite optimization has to do with getting links back to your website which will alert the search engines to your website presence, along with helping to boost your rankings for your target keywords. This is an ongoing process that should never be neglected or else your website could very easily slow down or perhaps stall altogether. There are a number of different ways in which this type of optimization can be done and it is difficult to cover them all within the scope of a single article. There are some ways, however, that should always be included because they are simple and because they tend to work well.

For a new website, you want to make sure that you are positioned properly in the search engines by having all of your pages included in the index. For this purpose, Web directories tend to do very well and there are hundreds, if not thousands of them for you to choose from. Submitting your website to these directories, using a variety of different link text to link back to your website is always an excellent way for you to start off any SEO effort that you're going to put into a website. Although you can not expect to rank well after submitting to directories, it will get the search engines interested in your website and typically results in your entire site being within the index.

The next thing that you should look for is incoming links to your website through a variety of different authority sites. Some of the most popular of these are article directories and Web 2.0 properties. For example, you could write a number of articles and distribute them to the article directories with a link back to your website. At the same time, you can submit your website to a number of different social bookmarking pages. This is an excellent way for you to begin to gain some authority in the eyes of the search engines.

From that point, you can begin looking for ways to get your website listed on the number of different websites. For example, you could write compelling content for your website that would naturally attract links from other webmasters. You can also offer to write content for other webmasters in exchange for a link to your website. Get a little bit creative with this process and you will soon find that your website is climbing in the rankings and the traffic is flowing in your direction.
