Three-wheeled golf push carts, and your own two feet, have become the transportation mode of choice for the serious-minded and health-conscious golfer. And for good reason. Walking saves money, not a bad thing in today's economy. The ergonomically efficient design of the three-wheel push cart reduces the strain on the arms, legs and back. And walking is healthy. Fitness experts calculate that walking 18 holes is comparable in benefit to a 45-minute fitness class.

The 3 wheel push golf cart is much easier to use and requires far less energy than the 2 wheel cart. You're able to walk with a natural gait. There is less fatigue involved when your hands are in front of you rather than having one hand stuck out behind you. The roll is supper- smooth.

Walking gets you more in tune to the game and closer to the golf course itself. It is a more focused and aware experience using a push cart across the terrain as opposed to hopping in a motorized golf cart. You have time to take in surroundings, see and feel the lay of the land and learn how the various holes are best approached. Walking with a push cart allows you to gain an appreciation for the nuances of a golf course that is just not available from a riding golf cart. You feel the incline and get an intuitive sense of when elevation affects club selection.

In just the last few years, golf push carts have been revitalized. Sun Mountain introduced the first three-wheel design in 1999 with the Speed Cart, turning the traditional two-wheel pull cart concept into the drastically improved push cart trend. In 2008, the Bag Boy Company introduced the Mini GT push cart. It received that year's Golf Europe Product Award at the International Trade Fair for Golf held in Munich, Germany, for being the most innovative push cart of the golf season. Bag Boy's Mini GT has a low center of gravity for a stable and easy effort on all terrains. Its simple push-button folding mechanism collapses the cart to a remarkably small 14 x 18 x 22 inches.

The different brands of three-wheel push carts might share a similar design, but differentiating features abound, from ease of folding, to size, weight and convenience accessories. The frame is made of a lightweight metal, usually aluminum. The tires look more like bicycle tires and move much more easily than the hard plastic wheels on your dad's old aluminum tripod. In addition, there are many golf cart accessories that make your round more enjoyable. Attachments for a water bottle, scorecard, umbrella and cell phone are available to have a customized golf cart. Sun Mountain's Speed Cart even offers an optional seat, which I find very useful as I find sitting from time to time during a round helps ease my back.

Cart prices range from $60 to $300, with the higher quality best sellers going for around $200. Cart weights range from 10 to 15 lbs.

A little hands-on shopping will help you assess which ones have the quality and feel you want. Shopping online is usually going to be the least expensive option, even if you have to spend a little time comparing prices from different websites.

Push carts are easy on the body, easy on the course and easy on the environment. The only carbon dioxide these devices put out is from the golfer's breath. They are compact, easy to handle, fold and store in the car trunk or garage. They glide over fairways,

Walking, whether carrying the bag or with a cart, is good. But walking is easiest with a push cart. With a push cart, you're much more likely to have that same spring in your swing on the 18th hole that you had on the first.
