Instead of assuming that 800 numbers and all that go with them is known to almost anyone who is in business today, better it is to tackle this just in case. Whether you have a small, medium or larger business, the 800 number concept is the same. And until the mid 90s, it was by and large too expensive of a proposition for most small and medium businesses. But that is no longer the case.

Here are some common questions and answers that will help you understand the 800 number concept.

800 number defined. What is an 800 number? An 800 number is also called a ‘toll-free’ number to which callers are not charged a fee on their phone bills when they dial. The concept is to provide an incentive to call the number without worrying about long distance charges. It is akin to placing a ‘collect’ call to another number, except that in this case, the recipient of the call is not given an option to accept the call and the associated charges.

Other ‘800’ numbers. Why are there other toll-free numbers besides 800? The distributors of these number have become so saturated with requests that the supply of 800 numbers was almost depleted, so other numbers like 888, 866, 877 and the like were created to handle the demand. These numbers all operate just like a standard 800 number.

Business advantages. How does a business benefit from an 800 number? It has been proven by many businesses that an 800 number increases not only calls into the business, but sales resulting from these calls as well. When an 800 number is purchased and implemented, it takes away one of the barriers that prospects might encounter when thinking about contacting a business for more information. Existing customers also enjoy the ability to contact the business at no charge for support and additional information.

Different 800 number providers. Are there other providers of 800 numbers to which I can move my number? You can move your number between providers. In fact, you should do research to find the best provider. A good provider not only offers good rates, but associated services such as a virtual PBX system that can help you get the most out of your number.

Vanity of vanities. What are ‘vanity’ 800 numbers and can they be used as well? Vanity numbers are those which are based on the name of the company or perhaps a slogan that is popular and creates an easy way to remember a number. For example, 800-get-well is easier to remember than its real number of 800-438-9355. These must be researched in order to make sure that they are not already in use or owned by another company.

Pricing of an 800 number. How much do these numbers cost? The pricing is based upon a usage model that determines your rates. With most providers you can choose a level of service and associated rate. Some even let you pre-pay for your services. Then, the call volume amount is deducted from your balance. Providers have varying rates and you are wise to shop around.

Other costs. Will I see any other ‘hidden’ charges on my bill? Every provider has their own billing system, but the most reputable provide up-front declaration of all costs and associated fees. If you feel you are not being given accurate information, then you should consider changing providers. Like any business, there are those who are less than honest in this business and they should be avoided.

Additional lines. Will I need to install more lines to get an 800 number? The great thing about these numbers is that they can be set up to ring into your existing number. That helps prevent you from having to add expensive lines which you might not use.

Now more than ever, getting an 800 number and virtual PBX system is all about saving you money while providing options that will help your business grow at the same time.
