How to Choose a Dentist?

Choosing your dentist could be the difference between an enjoyable experience and a not so pleasant experience, deterring you from good dental hygiene. Many people in search of a dentist will choose someone at random from the phonebook, go to a local dentist or pick one from a list that their dental insurance provides. Although you may get lucky with your choice, choosing a dentist should be more thorough then simply selecting a dentist randomly. So how should you choose your dentist? Dentists should be chosen according to many requirements.

A dentist should always have an excellent dental education as well as their licensing. You should make sure their licensing is up to date. Depending on the type of dentist that you are seeking, they may have additional certification such as a Doctor of Dental Surgery or a Doctor of Dental Medicine. This brings up another great factor when choosing a dentist. What type of dentist are you looking for? Are you looking or a general dentist or do you have a specific dental problem that needs fixed. You may be looking for an orthodontist or even a cosmetic dentist who specializes in cosmetic procedures such as tooth whitening and porcelain veneers.

If you already have a general dentist who makes you feel comfortable in the dentist’s chair and that you trust, then you should listen to his or her recommendations for a specialized dentist if you need other work done. For example, your general dentist will be able to perform dental hygiene procedures such as a thorough dental cleansing, make fillings for cavities, identify problem areas which a more specialized dentist will be able to examine and treat, and other general diagnosis. You should always meet with your dentist before choosing that person as your dental provider as you want to be comfortable with him or her working on your teeth. This goes for any type of dental provider you choose whether it is a general dentist or a specialist dentist that may have been recommended by your general dentist.

The other type of dentist which you should be particularly concerned with is a cosmetic dentist. For general dentistry, choosing a dentist is more common because nearly everyone goes for their oral hygiene checkup so there are many people that can refer excellent dentists. However, there are not many people who are willing to pay for cosmetic dentistry that is not necessary. For this reason, it will be harder to find a cosmetic dentist who many people have gone to for a procedure. In this case, you should look for the following factors while choosing a cosmetic dentist:

• The education, certification and licensing of the cosmetic dentist, you should also inquire about his or her clinical experience in the field and what his or her specialties are.

• Inquire about his or her referral process in the case that he or she does not perform the cosmetic surgery that you are looking to have performed.

• How long he or she has been practicing dentistry and in particular cosmetic dentistry. How long he or she has been in his or her practice for and where was he or she before opening this practice

• You should ask this professional about your options; pros of the procedure, cons of the procedure, other solutions, etc.

• Is there a recovery facility or emergency care after the procedure is performed? What type of medication is prescribed after the procedure?

• What are the dental costs of the procedure? Are there any financial options? Is there a payment option system or dental insurance coverage?

These are only a few of the questions that you should be asking this dental professional. You can also use these questions for any type of dental specialist that you may plan on visiting for a consultation.
