You have probably seen the TV commercial for Brinks Home Security:

A young woman home alone is running on a treadmill in front of a large picture window. It's dark outside and in the darkness a couple of menacing looking characters are eying their prey on the treadmill. Predictably, they break into the house. The alarm scares them away.

What's wrong with that picture?

What's wrong is that there are no curtains, blinds or shades on the window. You can't see into the darkness but anyone in the darkness can see into the well lit room. Is the young woman stupid, or what?

Would most women close the blinds, pull the shades or drapes when running on a treadmill or while just doing nothing, for that matter? I'm not so sure. Women have been sold a bill of goods when it comes to personal safety. It goes like this: You can dress or behave however you like. It doesn't give anyone a license to harm you. I get it, and I agree. But common sense says it's smart to deal with reality. In the real world, the intruders in the commercial could have done real damage and been long gone before (if) the police arrived.

Are women really that dumb when it comes to personal safety?

Some women really are that dumb. By dumb, I mean lacking common sense.

How often have you been at the supermarket and seen women leave their purse unattended in a shopping cart while they peruse the shelves? A friend who should have known better had her purse stolen while grocery shopping. She was so engrossed in reading labels that she didn't realize someone had zipped by her cart and grabbed her purse. It was found in a trash can outside of the store. The thief took only money; she was lucky her credit cards were not gone. I asked her why she left her purse unattended. She was annoyed by the question. "Well, we live in a safe area" was her reply. This is a woman with a college education and a responsible job, but short on common sense.

You've seen women, young and not so young, appear before Judge Judy trying to recoup money "loaned" to some creep not worth the time of the day let alone the money "loaned". Yes, I know, times have changed. Women have been liberated out of any sense of personal responsibility and common sense.

It used to be that women had more smarts than to deliberately put themselves and their belongings in jeopardy. They didn't give money to men and if they needed a roommate, they didn't invite someone they bailed out of jail to move in with them. What has gone wrong?

Plenty. Too much to get into here. But basically, women are confused about how to behave in an increasingly rude, crude, and often dangerous world. Women trust beyond all reason. They generously dish out sex, yearning for love that seldom materializes. In the name of freedom they invite and allow abuse.

It's sad that you can't chastise women for behaving like idiots. If you do, you are being mean and judgmental. After all, women are free to do whatever they choose to do. Unfortunately, that freedom is often an illusion and what is perceived as freedom can have unexpected and unwelcome consequences.

Judging by the number of women don't have enough sense to protect their personal safety and belongings, it appears common sense has gone the way of the dodo bird. But somehow I suspect that even a dumb dodo bird would not ignore its' most basic survival instincts and choose to flaunt its presence in front of possible predators. On the other hand, maybe the dumb dodo bird, reveling in it's perceived freedom would do just that and that's why it's extinct.

But of course, I could be wrong. :-)
