Being a college student for the first time sure gives you jitters. You become anxious and nervous at times when you think of the life ahead and what is in store for you. Too much apprehension can’t do you any good. Oftentimes, it could lead to intimidation. You tend to think of things in the wrong proportion, with other people bigger than you and you are just a tiny speck compared to them. It could blow your mind away.

A college student’s enemies during his first year are: homesickness, intimidation, and anxiety. These “enemies” aren’t that hard to fight. In fact, if you just find the courage to resist negative thoughts, you can easily get rid of these three.

Homesickness is common with students who study far from home. It is a normal reaction for anyone who is not accustomed to dealing with strangers or being on their own for some period of time. Don’t worry if you start missing your mom’s cooking and you feel the tears fall every now and then. To lessen this, try communicating with your family once in a while. In a few weeks or so, you should feel all right on your own.

Anxiety is a familiar feeling for everyone. We typically feel anxious every time we try something new. This is ok as long as it doesn’t start consuming you. On your first few weeks as a college student, try to loosen up a bit by taking a few deep breaths every time you feel nervousness crawling under your skin.
Intimidation could be a “by product” of anxiety. Once you get rid of the first one, intimidation should go away. If it doesn’t, you need to do some self motivation. If it doesn’t help, you might need to see a counsellor. Help is available always when you seek it.

Once a college student gets used to the things around like the school, people, teachers, their schedule, and other activities, all the above mentioned problems won’t exist anymore. You’ll be facing new hindrances and other nuisances. The most common of these is “bad influences.” By then, you should have gained friends whom you do things with. More often than not, you might be influenced to try something new. If you knew how to choose your friends, you have nothing to be worried about. Try looking for friends who are strong and determined to finish their studies. This is not to tell you to befriend the campus nerd. Just be careful in choosing who you go out with to eliminate peer problems.

Also, college students tend to experiment and go out of their way to have fun. It is perfectly healthy for anybody to loosen up and get some air once in a while so long as they do good and clean fun. A college student must also know how to choose what activities to do. You must remember always that you came to college to study and finish it in preparation for your life ahead. Although life gives us problems, which we occasionally solve by trial and error, it shouldn’t be wasted and experimented on.
