You have two options when buying a premium TV. Take your pick between Plasma and LCD televisions. All flat screen TVs that you'll see in the market now are either made from Plasma or LCD technology.

You are probably wondering which TV technology can provide better value. Here is a simple guideline you can use to determine the advantages and disadvantages of LCD and Plasma TVs.

Fundamentals of Plasma TV

The screen of Plasma TV is composed of plasma gas cells. When electricity passes through the gaseous cells, they become electrically charged. Throughout the process, the plasma gas will illuminate to generate images.

Every pixel of the Plasma TV is a source of light. That's why plasma TVs can produce fine and rich colors with clear images.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Plasma TVs

You can obtain high contrast color with Plasma TV. This is perhaps the greatest advantage you can get from a Plasma TV. In particular, plasma TVs has high black color definition. When watching shows with dark scenes, there will be no grayish or whitish spots on the screen. This allows you to see other things because the dark pixels will not mix with other screen colors.

Plasma TVs are equipped with top of the line motion tracking performance. This is essential if you are going to watch rapid movie sequences or sporting events.

On the other hand, Plasma TVs can suffer from image burn-in problems. If your screen suffers from burn-in then it will be permanently disfigured. The recent models of Plasma televisions have found a solution to this problem by using anti-burn-in devices. Image burn-in issues however still exists for first generations of Plasma televisions.

Appreciating LCD TV Technology

LCD TVs make use of liquid crystal to generate images on the screen. A light will pass through the liquid crystal from a backlight source. Crystal lights that are polarized will create different colors. The lights then will be transformed to millions of pixels to create images.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of LCD

Burn-in problem is not an issue with LCD TVs. LCD TV is more economical in consuming power since its screen display is cooler. LCD TVs have natural anti-glare capability. Viewing experience is better with LCD TV in a well-lit room.

In comparison to a Plasma TV, LCD TVs have lower contrast ratios which could reduce its ability to display high definition color. In addition, rendering black colors is also a weakness of LCD TV.

Another major weakness of LCD is its inability to capture high speed movement. So you can come across some troubles with motion tracking performance. Current high-end LCD TV models have improved motion tracking performance.

Even if LCD televisions do not suffer from burn-in screen problems, some pixels of the LCD screen are sensitive to color aging. If this occurs, you will see white or gray spots on your TV screen.

Plasma and LCD TVs can provide you with pleasant viewing experience. These are high-tech equipments and designed for top-quality performance. But, like any other modern gadget, they have advantages and disadvantages. You have to decide which kind of modern television is appropriate for your needs.
