One of the worst feelings coming home is to find that you have lost the key to your house; or you are heading out the door and realizing you just can't find your keys; or that you close the door tightly just as you realize your keys are on the kitchen counter. Don’t worry! There are many tips on tracking your keys and following them will help you have an easier time opening your doors as well as not being locked out of your home!

Always choose a single place for your keys. Once you are in the house, ensure that the keys are placed in a designated spot always. Establish a routine, forcing yourself to take the extra time to put your keys in the designated place; and be consistent. This is one ingredient to ensure that your keys can be tracked. Decide which pocket or handbag you will carry your keys in and then, again, stay consistent. For example, you should always know to check your right back pocket for the keys. When you use your keys, make a habit of carefully replacing them in their proper pocket. This will require a conscious effort until your habit is firmly established. Make a habit of always checking your pocket or handbag for your keys before you leave a place or prior to closing your front door.

Always keep a set of duplicate or spare keys. If you have a neighbor you trust, that is the perfect solution to the problem of where to keep an extra set of your keys. It is important to have extra keys for two reasons. First, if you are a woman with more than one handbag you need a set of keys for each bag. Having a set of keys in each purse will ensure that no matter how quickly you run out of the house, you will be able to re-enter with a key instead of looking for an unlocked window! Second, having an extra set put in a safe place such as your garage or under a doormat by the front or back door will definitely help.

Always attach the keys to bright and colorful key chains. This way no matter where you set it down, you will be able to notice it quicker than rest of the items. You can also choose one place in every room where you can put down your keys. So that in case you are not able to find them in the usual place, there are much fewer places to look before you find them. You just have to look in one spot in each room to see if your keys are in that room. Use electronic locaters, though this may prove to be a costly affair.

Keep these simple pointers in mind and you can always keep track of your keys, without having to worry about them. Following a routine to track your keys, diligently and mastering it may take some time, but with a little bit of practice and patience, you will discover that you never end up misplacing your keys!
