Today, everyone is looking for a way to gain a competitive edge. Rising competition has many owners looking for ways to streamline their operations and processes. A great way to realize significant gains is through outsourcing IT tasks. However, the question is sure to arise regarding whether or not outsourcing is a better option than investing in internal IT staff. Here are a few basic differences to consider:

Quality: Many business owners are concerned about the quality of services and staff they will be receiving when they outsource. In house staff tend to have a few years of training and a similar amount of experience—if the business owner is lucky. On the other hand, the staff at many IT staffing firms are industry experts who devote a large amount of time to learning about the latest innovations and how these new trends can be used to benefit business owners. When it comes to quality, most business owners who have tried both situations will attest that outsourcing often yields the best quality.

Cost: Up front, outsourcing IT needs seems like it would be expensive and may make business owners wary to do it. However, the truth is that over time outsourcing is a very economical decision. True, outsourcing usually involves an up front expense and perhaps an occasional consulting fee. However, those costs are generally less in the long run than hiring and maintaining and internal salaried staff. Beyond salaries, you have to consider the ongoing costs of training and insurance as well as the time and money required to hire in-house staff in the first place.

Expenses: Outsourcing sounds expensive, but it often is much more economical than keeping a permanent IT staff in-house. Keeping employees requires time and money up front to hire them as well as ongoing costs such as wages, training, and insurance. On the other hand, outsourcing usually involves an up-front cost and perhaps a few hours of consultant further on down the road. Thus, in the long run, outsourcing is generally cheaper.

Personal Service: Business owners are often drawn to in-house staff because they believe that personnel that spend all day every day in their office will know exactly what is needed and how to deliver it. However, IT staffing firms have the benefit of having individuals that work with many other businesses like yours. In-house staff may have to undergo a large amount of training to get up to speed with the best technology because they do not work with it on a daily basis. IT consultants, on the other hand, do not. IT consultants also have the advantage of having much more experience getting the right kind of data that a business needs to improve processes due to their ability to separate themselves from the business.

Range of Services: At this point, the wise business owner has to ask themselves: can a single IT person, or even a stable of them, provide the range of services a business requires? Whether you need basic IT advice or more specialized assistance such as software design, an IT staffing firm has the range of specialized staff needed to provide the knowledge of an industry expert for a variety of technological needs.

Outsourcing may be exactly what your company needs to take the next big step with your technology. Getting help from highly qualified industry professionals with a diverse skill set and experience is the most cost effective and sensible way to get the help you need to gain a competitive advantage over your competition.
