Is Texas Holdem poker a game of skill or luck? That's a subject that has been up for debate for a long long time and will probably continue to be. That's where the similarities end, though. You see, in games like blackjack, you play against the house, not other players. Texas Holdem brings a whole other element to the game. It is a game that is as much about cards as about people, since you are playing against other players. How well you do at it depends, not just on how well you know the rules of poker, but on how you act and react with the other people at the table.

Math and Poker

Even though there is something to be said for reading your opponents in poker, you also need to focus on the cards. There are a lot of mathematical statistics involved in calculating how well you will fair in a certain hand with certain hands. Those statistics change based on things like how much money is in a card, how many players are still in a hand, how many cards have been mucked (discarded) and, of course, what cards you have.

Earning Potential and game Type

There's no way to know exactly how much you will make in a certain amount of time playing Texas Holdem. A lot of it will depend on which type of Holdem game you play, though. In limit Holdem, for example, you may not have the quick earning potential that you have in pot-limit or no-limit games. The advantage, though, is you also don't have the chance to risk as much as you would in those game types.

Skill level

Finally, remember that skill level and knowledge plays a major role in poker earning potential. In other words, if you have a fair amount of poker knowledge and play against brand new players, you're likely to win more hands. On the other hand, if you play against players who are much more experienced than you, you're likely to lose your chips. So, it's important to work your way up the ranks slowly and learn where your optimum play level is. Only then can you have a shot at making a profit playing Texas Holdem.
