The city of Toronto, the harbor itself and Toronto Island are all loaded with fascinating stories of a colorful history. From a Toronto Harbor cruise you can drink in the majesty of the history on your own, creating a bit of history for yourself , or you can opt to take the ferry on the harbor and hear of the city's illustrious past on an historical tour.

Choosing any of the magical themed cruises or romantic dinner cruises that float the harbor on a nightly basis is a great way to spend an evening or a part of your vacation, but if your stay is longer than just one evening it's definitely a worth while experience to drink in some of the city's history.

An historic tour of the Toronto Harbor will help you to learn many of the interesting 'facts' that make Toronto one of the most fascinating places to visit.

You'll get to see the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, one of the city's oldest and most famous attractions. Though the lighthouse is no longer in active use as a sailor's guide, the structure erected in 1808 helped ships into port for more than a century and a half. Many of the locals believe that the Gibraltar Point lighthouse is haunted, and depending on whom your guided tour may be led by; there are chances that you may come away with more than a few ghost stories.

Another big part of the history lesson that you'll most likely get to hear has to do with the city of Toronto's role in the American prohibition. During the time that the sale and consumption of alcohol was illegal in the United Sates and 'speakeasies' were the only places for a hardworking American to get a drink, the city of Toronto's capitalistic side came to the forefront. Americans could take an inexpensive ferry ride from Rochester, New York and visit the casino built on Toronto Island which had alcoholic beverages to spare. Americans could take the short boat ride and easily fulfill all of the desires they had to do with alcohol, and then safely be ferried back to the states when they'd had their fill.

You may also be regaled with the history of the sporting world as it occurred in the city of Toronto. There are rumors that, before Babe Ruth was considered to be the greatest home run hitter to have ever stepped on a baseball diamond, that he hit a monstrous home run out of Hanlan's Point Stadium on Toronto Island and into the harbor. Though the ball, or the remains of it, probably still sits far beneath the surface of the water, a local bar proudly displays 'the Babe Ruth Home Run' ball as an attraction for sports fans and patrons to see.

The city of Toronto has a very colorful history the facts, stories and details of which can absolutely captivate. A walking tour of the city can show a visitor much of what the city has to offer, but to truly get a sense of the history of Toronto you need to experience the waterfront and the harbor. You can schedule an historic boat tour with one of the many major cruise lines, or get an impromptu history lesson from a more colorful guide on the ferry , or you can choose to hear about Toronto's history in both ways. Whether your interest is sports history, old ghost stories or the birth of Canadian capitalism, one thing is for sure, a look back into the wild wonderment that built the beautiful city of Toronto is something that any visitor to the captivating city will enjoy.
