PR professionals are responsible for handling the communication of the company with media, employee relations, community relations and special interest events. They are the guards of the story of an organization, and make sure that it is seen in a positive light by public. Though like all other professions, even the industry of Public Relations also demands certain educational qualifications but before we discuss education PR, it would be wise to know the personality skills that a person must possess (or at least develop) during their PR studies, to become a good PR professional.

It goes without saying that effective communication is a must-have for anyone who aspires to become a part of the PR industry. Being self-confident, having a problem-solving approach, sound judgment and good decision-making skills are a few other personality traits that are an indication of an efficient PR professional. It helps to be an extrovert, as you have to deal with different kinds of people every day. Hence, a PR person should be a complete presentable package as they are the one who addresses the media and the public on the behalf of the company.

To grab your first PR job, a bachelor’s level degree in public relations, mass communication, journalism, and advertising or in Literature can be of great help. To make things more favorable for you, advanced degrees in the mentioned areas can also be opted for. There are several four-year schools that offer courses in these areas. Many educational institutions also arrange for internships for practical knowledge to students, nowadays.

Experience in the same industry in which your PR Company deals in is another plus to your resume. For instance, if you have worked in the IT industry before at some other company, and then you apply to work for an IT company as a PR professional, your career experience could make things even easier for you.

As a part of your PR studies, you would learn everything that you need to handle in your professional career later; it may be PR theories, communication tactics, skills, body language and many other things. Technical knowledge would include connections with media and writing skills to draft effective and powerful press releases. Though not many media professionals need to use desktop publishing computer program but you would be taught this as well as this is a commonly used program in the field of communication.

Once you are through with your PR studies, you become eligible for several positions in organizations. PR specialist, media specialist, Publicist, Information officer and Press secretary are a few common positions that would be open for you after the studies. As a PR professional, you may work with government agencies, private companies, communication firms, marketing organizations, non-profit agencies, hospitals or even schools; the choice is up to you.

Professionals in the PR industry usually have frequent changes in their schedules and they also face many challenges. So, students should be such that they are able to work effectively even in stressful situations. Anyone who gets stressed easily would find it difficult to cope in this industry.
