Your car breaks down.

You get that unfortunate sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach as you start to ponder the repair bill. The tow truck comes, and hauls your car off to the nearest repair shop. It's diagnostics time. You discover the problem that caused your car to break down, paid to fix it...and now you have a car that is running much more smoothly than before.

The same can be said of your home based business...is it breaking down? How do you know? Where is weakest? What can you do to repair it?

One simple concept will reveal even the slightest need for "home business repair", diagnostics. Correctly diagnosing your home business to a set of proven benchmarks will prove your home business's actual strengths (they're not what you think) and identify the profit-draining weaknesses (the ones that can be fixed).

Once you have this crucial information (your real strengths and weaknesses), you can begin to immediately focus on the true areas of your home business that will produce dramatic results. Without this specific business diagnosis, you're guessing, period. You might get lucky, and partially repair the specific parts of your business that will help you get results...but why guess?

Here are several of the key areas you can and should begin to look:

* Goals and goal setting

In order to achieve you goals, you first must set them properly. Several key mistakes are made in this area by most entrepreneurs.

* Your home business's reputation

How well-marketed is your home business? How well does your service stack up against other competitors in the same market?

* Your home business's selling style

Most failing home based businesses can look to their inability to “sell” as the reason for failure. How much does your sales process keep prospects from converting to sales? Probably too much.

* The tools you're using to grow your business

The tools you use are as important, if not more important, than executing your plans.

* Your business plan (not the huge and unreadable 500 page corporate version)

While you don't need the thick version of a business plan to effectively guide your home business, it's important that you do have a business plan for banks, and guidance towards your objectives.

* Your backend sales plan

What do you plan to sell to your buying customer list? Do you even have a database of paying customers? This is critical to the growth of any home business...yet missed by most owners.

* Your marketing planning and execution

Marketing is the most critical part of the entire plan for your home business. Without leads and customers...you don't have a business.

* The planning and execution of your website (you do have one, right?)

You must have a website, and it can no longer be a brochure style website any longer...a selling website is necessary. Proper planning and execution of your business website is critical to the survival of your home business.

While this list is not all-inclusive...within each of these categories lies the "spark plugs" that will ignite your home business's engine...and give you the true freedom and business ownership that you deserve.
