Gas mileage (referred to as miles per gallon or mpg), depends on the gas we use and will vary between each individual vehicle type. However, much of the actual variation we see is a result of our driving habits and the condition of our car.

Changing just a few simple habits could greatly improve your miles per gallon, helping you to save on gas. Even a small increase in mpg can equate to hundreds of dollars worth of savings across the course of a year. Here are a few tips to go about making those savings.

Be Sensible

If you’re like most people, it’s likely that you’re often in a rush to get places. However, in many cases passing doesn’t save much time on your journey – all it does is waste gas and decrease your miles per gallon ratio. When driving; speeding, accelerating quickly, and then breaking all wastes gas. Next time you’re trying to get somewhere, hold back from speeding in front of everyone. Being more speed conscious could end up saving you an extra 10 percent on your gas mileage, and may even save your life and the planet!

Remove Excess Weight

Many of us carry things around in the trunk of our cars that we just don’t need. Loading your trunk makes your car heavier in general, which means the engine has to work harder to move it forward, therefore using more gas. If you frequently carry around 100 pounds then you could be decreasing your miles per gallon by around 2 percent.

Inflate Your Tires

Your gas mileage can be improved by around three percent simply by inflating your tires to the correct pressure. You can find your optimum pressure in the car’s manual, and simply use an automatic pump to get it right.

Watch Your Speed

The exact speed you travel in general will also have an impact upon your miles per gallon ratio. Maintaining a constant speed is a great way of saving gas. On the highway you should always make use of Cruise Control, as it helps save gas.

You can also try driving slower. Reducing your speed on the highway can save a large percentage of your gas mileage. All cars are different, but most cars will become much less efficient at anything over 60MPH.

Keep Your Car In Good Condition

If there are any serious problems with your car then repair will usually improve your miles per gallon ratio. If your engine is out of tune then repairs will also help improve the ratio by a few percent. It is advised to check the emissions of the engine regularly, and go for good quality repairs over cheaper, short-term solutions.

Conclusion

It might take a while to get used to, but all of these changes can be incorporated into your daily routine. The next time you start blaming your car for its poor gas mileage, start thinking about what you can do to improve your savings on gas.
