No matter how great you looked when the picture was taken, driver's licenses and other forms of picture identification always seem to come out awful. Make sure your driver's license shows you in your most flattering light!

It is often difficult to avoid having a license picture that is dreadful, although it is possible to get a good picture that you happen to like.

Relax on the day of your appointment, and get some rest so that you don't look tired or haggard. Bring some reading material or other entertainment along so that you aren't frustrated if you have to wait and make sure to get a good night's sleep the night before. Remember your mood will come out in your driver's license photo, so take a few deep breaths and try to think about the bigger picture, as it were, if you find yourself growing frustrated or impatient.

Choose a pair of earrings, if you wear them, which is large enough to be clearly distinguished, or small enough to be almost unnoticeable in the photo; medium-sized earrings will just look strange.

You will want to spend the time to make sure your hair is washed and styled. A hairstyle which adds height won't make your hair appear healthier. If your hair is colored, get it touched up right before you go in for a new driver's license photo, because otherwise the camera will zoom in on your roots like you wouldn't believe.

Use a little bit of powder or blotting paper right before your picture to cut down on shine, whether you're a man or a woman. Exaggerate make-up slightly so that it stands out in the photo, but don't go overboard, because you don't want to look garish. And make sure you clean the lenses of your glasses!

Stand up straight and make sure you smile. Move your shoulders away from the camera a bit, to present a softer profile. Tip your chin up slightly to reduce shadows. You will also find that the skin on your face tightens.

The degree to which you are smiling is essential to a quality driver's license photograph. A closed mouth can appear set and hard, but you don't need to go overboard. Close your eyes and open them again, so that you don't blink just as the shutter clicks.

Review your picture.
So that they can print your license out instantly and enter your photograph into the records, most DMVs today take digital photographs. Usually they will be happy to let you look at your picture and request a re-take.

The photo on your license might not be a great masterpiece, but with these concepts, it could turn out to be more of a portrait and less of a prison photo.
