Did you know that veterinary costs are rising at twice the rate that your salary is? Today, with all the advanced medical equipment some clinic have, the amount of money you have to pay to have a healthy pet can be staggering.

Most people think that pet insurance can help, but often times they are wrong. The internet if filled with people complaining about how they paid their premiums for years only to not be covered when they needed it the most.

Don’t rely on pet insurance alone. You need other forms of money to get you and your pet through. One way to do this is with a pet savings plan. Another way to do this is by lowering you vet bill.

So with the rising cost of vet bills, finding an affordable vet makes sense. But sometimes it can be hard to know where to look. Here are three tips to help you find a low cost vet in your area.

One of the best places to look for an affordable vet is through the local humane society. They are very likely already working with a veterinarian that works at a reduced rate.

If they are not, they can likely point you in the direction that you need to go, or give you some additional resources.

The second way to find one is just to call around and ask what their prices are. If you call around to three veterinary clinics and ask what the average price of a spay is, then you can get a general idea of prices.

One potential downfall of this approach is that sometimes vet clinics charge a reduced rate for spays to get new clients, but overall their prices can be more expensive.

The third way to find one is by driving. Veterinarians set their prices by what the average income is of households in a 3 to 5 mile radius around the clinic.

Often times just by driving to an area of town where the level of household incomes is lower, you can find a vet that charges less.

If you live in a nice suburban area then doing this can make sense. But if you live in a small town or rural area, often your choices are much less.

Also remember to ask your current vet if you can get a break on prices. Sometimes they will give you one if they know you are a good client that pays right away.

Many vets are reluctant to give price breaks or payment plans because they have likely been burned before by clients who promised to pay but later did not.

So if you are asking your vet for a discount make sure you pay promptly and for the full amount. If you do this you will likely be able to get discounts in the future as well, so don’t ruin a good thing.

Use these three tips the next time need to find a low cost vet in your town.
