If your business has a Website – and most do – you have probably considered SEO services to help you improve your search engine ranking. Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a set of services designed to move you closer to the top of the rankings on major search engines like Google and Yahoo.

SEO services are typically offered by an SEO consulting firm, of which there are many. In the Toronto area alone you could search through ten pages of Google listings for the phrase “SEO services Toronto” and still find relevant results. The key to finding the right partner is understanding what you need and determining how the consultant can help you meet your needs.

SEO and Organic Search

When I talk about search engine rankings, I am talking about organic or natural search. Organic search results are those that you have not paid for. These differ from sponsored links, in which companies bid for keywords and are ranked according to what they pay.

Natural search results are generally believed to be the better option because they are trusted more by Internet users. That is not to say that pay per click advertising (PPC) doesn’t have a place in your online marketing strategy. PPC can be very helpful for an initial period to build some traffic to your site and help you with keyword research. You may want to inquire with your SEO consultant about it.

But the ultimate goal is to rank high in the organic search results. And for that you need two things: a multifaceted approach and time. Do not overlook that last variable. SEO takes time and any SEO services company that promises you a number one ranking without at least some time invested, is probably not being honest with you.

What Is Covered in SEO Services

SEO services generally include a wide range of options designed to build links to your site and, eventually, boost your search engine ranking. Links that point to your site are extremely important to your ranking, and your SEO consultant will spend most of his or her time on link building.

Links are not everything though. You need a site with clean code and content that is relevant to your business (and the keywords people will use to find your business).

Here, then, is a basic list of the services your SEO consultant will offer you:

• Keyword research – The critical first step, this research tells you which terms to target in your Website content.

• Website Evaluation – A careful look at the strengths and weaknesses of your current Website, and suggestions for improvement.

• Content – Reviewing your content and looking at ways to optimize it for your chosen keyword terms.

• Link Building Strategies – Using directories, articles, blogs and social media to create links that point to your site.

This is a short list, and your consultant may offer additional services. The consultant should offer to tailor services to your needs, and not try to sell you a bunch of SEO services that you either cannot afford or don’t need.

Before you sign with a consultant, do some research into the services listed above so you can at least speak the same language. Get some references and ask to see actual results. Only then can you be sure that the SEO services you sign up for will be effective for your business.
