Just about every item you can think of can be bought at 50-90% off retail at thrift stores. Have you ever shopped at one? Some people do not because of the "stigma" attached to these kinds of stores. Certain people just won't get caught in one of these stores because they do not want to be viewed as cheap or poor. Sadly, these people are passing up incredible bargains on clothes, household goods, electronics, video games etc.

Don't be one of these people! If you live in any area with a population of over 1500 people, chances are you are within a reasonable drive to one or more thrift stores. There are many types of thrift stores. Here is my experience with these stores.

1. Non-Profit Thrift: These stores are part of a non-profit group. Items are donated and sold, usually at a very good price. Proceeds usually support the non-profit involved or charity. Quality does vary, since much of the items being sold are cast-offs or discards. This, however, does not mean you can't find some very good items.

2. Independent Thrift Stores/Consignment: Other thrift stores are simply independent operators selling or consigning items they have purchased for resale, acquired for consignment or purchased from sales, auctions and closeouts. You can find very good deals here as well, and often times, operators will specialize in certian items. Quality tends to be higher at these stores, and often times bargains from name brands and contemporary merchandise can be found.

3. National Retailers: There are a few national chains that are just really big thrift stores. Savers, Big Lots, TJ Maxx. Yes, you can find very good deals here too, but often times prices are higher because of more company overhead.

4. Pawn Shops: Finally, pawn shops sometimes operate like thrift stores, selling a variety of items but more often than not specialize in jewlery, guns, tools, electronics. Oddly, I have found the WORST buys at pawn shops. My typical experience has been over-inflated prices at or very near retail. Occasionally, I have seen a bargain on an electronic item. My advice is to buy at a pawn shop as a LAST resort.

Now you know the alternatives to used goods retailers. Check one out today in your area, your wallet will thank you.
