1. Probably the most successful and memorable poster created is the Lord Kitchener recruitment poster from 1914. This poster was successful because it relates directly to the viewer making them seem important. It was very successful and managed to encourage huge numbers of people to volunteer to join the army. The poster is so successful that it has been reproduced and parodied many times since. The poster was recreated for America during World War 1 and World War 2. The American version has Uncle Sam on it instead of Kitchener.

2. The inspirational/motivational posters designed by Successories have become famous through the many parody posters that have been created in the same distinct style called de-motivational posters. The original posters, known as corporate impressions, were designed for offices or schools to inspire and motivate people. The designs on the posters are very simple. There is an inspirational picture followed by an inspirational quote below it with a heading such as “Success” or “Brilliance”. The background to the posters is black which makes the image stand out and gives it its distinct look.

3. The cult film by Pink Floyd The Wall is best known, after the music, for the incredible art work by Gerald Scarfe. His animations are what really gave the movie its edge. It is the artwork that makes the posters for this movie so iconic and unforgettable.

4. The posters for the ipod mp3 player have a very distinctive and instantly recognisable style. They usually feature a black silhouette of a person dancing with a bright coloured background behind them. The white ipod and headphones stand out against the black silhouette. The success of these adverts has lead to the creation of new adverts where the background is multicoloured. Like a lot of successful posters the ipod style has been parodied and reproduced many times.

5. Another cult film with a very recognisable poster is Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. The poster features the main character Alex holding out a knife though the letter ‘A’. The poster is very simple on a white background and was designed by Bill Gold. The poster captures the sinister nature of the film whilst intriguing the viewer.

6. The always controversial PETA created a striking poster for their anti fur campaign. The posters featured celebrities or models naked with the slogan “Fur? I’d rather go naked”. These posters were so successful because of the powerful messages behind them, or maybe because they featured naked women. Whatever it was that led to the success of these posters they certainly stuck in people’s minds.

7. Movie posters would not be what they are today if it wasn’t for artist Drew Struzan. Struzan is responsible for creating some of the most exciting and memorable movie posters. From E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial to Indiana Jones his posters have captivated millions of people into seeing these movies. With over a hundred movie champagnes Drew Struzan is still creating posters to this day including Harry Potter. With his complex, hand painted, compositions it’s clear that Drew Struzan really knows how to attract an audience.

8. The Guinness posters by John Gilroy were very successful. They were simple illustrations with their now famous slogans “My goodness my Guinness” and “Lovely Day for a Guinness”. Many of the posters featured the Guinness toucan. The quirky images and memorable slogans were certainly what made the posters successful.

9. The poster for the movie Jaws is simple but effective and probably one of the best known movie posters. The poster has a sinister calmness to it, the moment just before the disaster strikes frozen. The poster captures the suspense of the movie and the terrifying monster amazingly well.

10. Disguised as an old magazine the poster for Pulp Fiction is very striking. Uma Thurman lays across a bed the image of a film noire femme fatale a cigarette in one hand and a gun in front of her. The price 10 cent is one of the many details that make this poster successful.

Full colour poster printing has stood the test of time as being one of the most effective advertising strategies which can reach out to a national and international audience.
