What's The Easiest Way To Quit Smoking?

Quitting smoking is one of those horrid problems that nobody ever really wants to face. It's supposed to be dang near impossible, and who wants to try something that's impossible? Luckily, it's actually not that hard, it's just that everybody who does it is doing it quite wrong.

Most people quit through what could only be seen as the most backwards way possible. The way that most people quit smoking is kind of like preventing workplace injuries by mandating that all employees wear body armor. That probably sounds really stupid right now, but it'll make sense in a second.

Smoking is an addiction that affects you mentally. When you're addicted to smoking, you aren't as much addicted physically as you're addicted mentally. Your mind is convinced that, for some unknown benefit, it absolutely needs cigarettes. If you actually try to think about it, it makes no sense. Non-smokers don't need cigarettes to deal with life's stresses, yet you do for some reason. Oh, that's right, you're addicted and your body needs cigarettes or else it'll not work, or something.

So, when people quit smoking, they happily slap on their nicotine patches and blab to all of their friends about how they quit smoking and they haven't smoked in 2 days, 3 hours, 10 minutes, and 5 seconds. They're so amazed with the fact that they've quit smoking that all they're really doing is picking up another addiction: annoying the heck out of everybody around them.

Then, all of a sudden, they go to the pub or out with their friends or something and what're they doing? Ripping the nicotine patch off and chain-smoking, because all they've done is put on some silly sticker that doesn't really do anything for what really makes them smoke. It's like making office furniture out of broken glass and, you guessed it, wearing body armor to prevent injuries. Not terribly brilliant, but I'm sure somebody has thought of the office idea too.

Let's say that you aren't one of those people. You might have been one of those people, but then you realized that their ideas are just a bit daft and quite a bit useless. Let's say that you want to actually become a non-smoker and not sit around all the time kicking yourself for doing what smokers do: smoke cigarettes.

Start by figuring out just what causes you to want to smoke. Perhaps make a list on a piece of paper, or make it on the computer, or on your PDA or whatever you want. List all of the things that you can think of that make you want to smoke. My top things would be talking to my girlfriend and going to the pub.

Take a look at the list. These things don't make you want to smoke because they inherently make people want to smoke, they make you want to smoke because that's what you've always done when you do those things. So, stop smoking when you do them! Next time you take a break from work, grab some coffee instead of a cigarette. Over time, you'll teach your mind that smoking isn't what you need to be doing every time you have two seconds free in your life.
