Cake decorating is definitely an art form. You need a certain set of skills and an oozing amount of creativity in you to turn this into a hobby, or even more, a business. The best cake decorators have a knack for adding delicate swirls and twists to their designs making you think twice before destroying this great piece of art and putting it into your mouth. But if you don’t necessarily have the skills set but have the passion to decorate cakes, the do not fear. Here’s a complete guide on how to start a cake decorating business.

Most beginners make the mistake of over indulging in unnecessary tools when they begin with this business. So as not to waste time, you will find below some tips you can get started with:

Tip #1 – Find out what types of cakes you want to start your business with. Would you like to begin with wedding cakes, birthday cakes or just simple party cup cakes? When you start with something that you’re interested, you are sure to keep it going until you’re ready to learn the next set of skills. And to further enhance these skills, you may take up classes or watch videos and download recipes from the internet. Take time to practice these skills and if you failed once, then pick yourself up and try again. Becoming an experience cake decorator does not usually happen overnight. It requires time, patience and hard work. And if you have all these, who’s to say you’ll never make it in this business?

Tip #2 – Structure your pricing well and keep it competitive. Devote time in the computation of your capital and the profit you wish to earn through this business. Remember that as you are starting up, the most important thing is to differentiate yourself from the competition. A high-priced line-up of cakes, no matter how creative the designs are, may not necessarily be a hit right away. Start with something reasonable and slowly build up the pricing but keep it on a level that ordinary people will still be able to buy. It is important to make an impression on your target market that you’re in it not just for the money but to meet people’s needs and give an extra something to their events.

Tip #3 – Spread the word around. Promote yourself. Establish your marketability. There’s nothing wrong in sharing you spreading your product line by word of mouth. It is essential for this business to grow to start with your own network of families and friends and work your way to their own networks. If you are able to provide the best service topped by your ability to produce great works of art, people will surely talk about you. You can expect to build your business through referrals. It is also important to have a portfolio or a website where you could post pictures so that when the phones start ringing off the hook, you will have means to support your words with visual aids that could get everybody’s attention.
