Many people have different skills. They like doing different things. While others have technical capabilities, some might have creative hands that could work their magic on their very own masterpiece. If you’re the creative one and have the gift of baking and cake decorating, then it’s about time you cultivate these skills and turn it into a business.

To start cake decorating business is not an easy task. However, if you got the hang of it, you’ll generate profit beyond your wildest dreams. And you may ask just how lucrative this business is? Well, according to The Bridal Association of America, some wedding cakes are around the range of $700-$3,500 and possibly even more. And 2/3 of these prices you would keep in your pocket. So if this has convinced you to turn your skills into a profit generating venture, then read on and get yourself started.

1. Enrol yourself in a class and enhance your skills.

This will determine just how serious you are about this business. You need educate yourself if you want to be successful. Some do this through trial and error but that could certainly slow you down. There are community colleges and affordable grocery store classes that you could attend and they don’t have to be expensive. You may also watch videos and get tips from the articles you read in cake magazines and online. Also, you may take advantage of opportunities to attend conventions, conferences and exhibits in order to learn the latest trends in designs and techniques in cake decorating. After gaining the right skills, you have to practice it otherwise you will loose what you have learned.

2. Cake Clubs

When you join a cake club in your area, this will give you a chance to expand your client network as well as your social network who share your passion for the sugar arts. Most clubs meet once a quarter and each meeting a person volunteers to do demonstrations on the techniques that could help you improve your craft.

3. Don’t be afraid to compete.

But first you need to make sure that your products are indeed competitive. To do this, you need to review your pricing the designs of your cakes, the events you can cater to and the lists of clients in your database. Then, you need to spread the word around through your families and friends that way you have an easy access to your market share. Prepare your own portfolio or create a blog or a website where you could post pictures and descriptions of your products. It’s a fun and easy way for your clients and prospects to view your past works and stuff that you could actually do for them in the future. Don’t forget to include your full contact details and make sure you have business cards ready whenever you attend events. Of course in order to stay competitive, you would need to take some risks and venture into designs that are never before seen or heard of. Try to gain insights and ideas wherever you go and extract your creative juices in order to keep your share of the market and increase it as your business continues to grow.
