Grandparents seem to always buy the best gifts for their grandkids. Most of us have fond memories of a favorite present that our grandparents gave to us. Once you are old enough to have a job and an income of your own, it is time to return the favor and select a great gift for them! This can be something of a problem, since they either seem to have everything that they need or they have different tastes and wouldn’t appreciate the same things that a younger person might like. The purpose of this article is to help inspire you with the best gift ideas for grandparents.

Vacation Necessities

If you are old enough to select a gift for your grandparents, chances are that they are retired or reaching retirement age. One of the benefits to retiring is the free time and the chance to do all the times that you never had an opportunity to do when you were working. This could be a vacation to Europe, an African safari, or a trip to New Zealand. Most retired folks don’t bother to get new luggage, even if they have been using the same suitcases for the last twenty years or more. This makes new luggage a top gift for grandparents. It has the added advantage of fitting any budget, since you can splurge on a set of matching luggage or keep it less expensive with a simple carry-on bag. Even if your grandparents aren’t planning a vacation, this gift is still terrific, since it could inspire them to take the vacation that they have always dreamed about.

Home Decor

One area that usually works for a personalized gift for someone who already has a lot of personal accessories is home décor. You have to be careful buying home décor for older people because their tastes are probably different than yours. That futon that you love may clash with your grandparent’s antique furniture. One option that usually pleases is a stuffed animal suited to their tastes. I bought my grandmother a stuffed parrot to replace a beloved pet that had passed away and she loved it, displaying it in her kitchen where she could enjoy it with coffee in her breakfast nook. The key is to keep the plush animal realistic and not gaudy. Day-glow colors or shoddy sewing can make the difference between a great gift and a mediocre one. Stuffed animals can be great decorations for people of all ages, livening up any décor. Just follow my example and pick an animal that your grandparents would enjoy, such as a cat for cat fanciers, or a dog for canine lovers. If you have previously opted for the luggage idea, then a stuffed lion or plush tiger could be a great reminder of that safari they took!

Comfort Aids

As people mature, they often have to deal with new aches and pains. Most grandparents will tell you that they have pain in their joints, back, feet, or other areas. Gifts that can soothe or help with relaxation are another great gift idea. One great present in this category is a water foot massager to ease their aching feet. A simple neck pillow is good for those on a limited budget; a full-size massage chair works if price isn’t an issue. Getting them something to soothe any discomforts that they are having will let them know that you understand them and are listening to what they say about themselves.

So now you have the top three gift ideas for grandparents - vacation gear, home décor in the form of a stuffed animal friend, and comfort aids for any pain they might be having. Make sure that you show your grandparents how much you love them as often as possible.
