If you are a small or medium sized business owner and have started the search for a company to handle your payroll services, you probably know that there are hundreds of options out there. This is an important decision - one that will greatly affect how well your business runs and that could directly affect your employees if made hastily. So, it is vital that you know exactly what things to look for in a good Payroll Bureau.

Questions You Should Ask

Payroll bureaus are designed to provide all of the resources you need for anything payroll related. The first question you should always ask is whether the company you're researching is set up to do just that. If they cannot cover both frequency payments and tax forms, you should look elsewhere. Here are a few other questions you should ask:

What Kind of Staff Do They Have Working For Them? - You should ensure that all tax paperwork is handled by well educated, well trained staff and that the company has enough staff members on hand to handle their workload. Don't be yet another company jammed into an overloaded schedule so they can make more money.

Are They Licensed? - Check up on all licensing and related paperwork to make sure the company you are hiring is legally capable of handling your payroll services.

Do They Have References or Clients You Can Interview? - If you can find clients that have worked with or are working with the payroll bureau currently, ask if you can contact them for a reference, just to see how well they work together and what you might expect.

How Easy Is It to Scale Larger? - If your company starts to grow, how hard will it be for you to increase the services you request from the payroll company? Many small businesses will face this dilemma eventually and it's better to know up front what you’ll need to do when it happens.

What Frequency Do They Provide Reports? - How often will you receive your reports and in what format? You should know the way that the payroll bureau provides information and what you'll need to both read them and request any updates or changes if necessary.

How Easily Can You Make Changes? - What is the process for changing your account, removing employees, adding new employees, or altering tax status for any given employee? These are all things you should be sure are as easy as possible to both save you time and ensure the payroll bureau is well organized.

The Right Answers

Only after you've asked your questions to all of the payroll bureaus you’re considering should you move towards making a final decision on which one to outsource your payroll services too. This is a very important decision and one not to be made lightly. If you spend the right time though and come up with a good, solid option, you'll benefit greatly for years to come.
