Walk into any store that specializes in automotive audio asking for speakers and chances are the options available will overwhelm. To lessen the confusion and assist with the ultimate selection, it is smart to have a good understanding of speakers and which ones might be required to produce the mobile sound you are dying to hear.

Before buying speakers, it pays to have a handle on the types out there. It is also wise to know what considerations should go into the purchase beyond pricing.

There are a number of different speaker types that are designed to turn the inside of a car into a mobile concert hall. The options out there include:

Coaxial – This type of speaker is also known as a three-way. It involves multiple speakers built into the same frame. They provide the perks of being easier to install and also more affordable than buying separate tweeters and woofers. The disadvantage is found in their lack of flexibility.

Separates – These are also known as component systems and they will typically include a tweeter and woofer. They should come with an external crossover. To install, the woofer would be placed in the hole made by the factory in the kick panel or door. The tweeters are more flexible on placement, but are commonly mounted near the top corner of the door panel or in the dash.

Horns – Speakers in this style are known for their excellent sound directing ability and their high efficiencies. The problem with horns is that they are high end and do cost more than coaxial or separate designs. The style of horns, however, eliminates the need for tweeters. Professional installation is often required to make the sound quality just right.

Mid-bases – This type of speaker can go lower in frequency than others. They do mount easily in the doors and are part of a three-way system that includes a tweeter and a mid. They do require rather complex crossovers to install, which could demand the use of a pro.

Beyond the actual type of speakers, there are a few other specifications with speakers to consider before making a purchase. They include:

Power – Make sure speakers, especially woofers, have roughly the same power handling ability that the amp driving them has.

Loudness sensitivity – This specification will reveal how loud a speaker can get given input power. Speakers that are considered insensitive will draw more power to play at the exact same volume level a more sensitive speaker can handle.

Size – It is imperative to make certain that speakers will fit in a vehicle where they need to be mounted for optimum sound quality. Tweeters, for example, should be relatively small and able to mount so found flows directly to listeners.

Enclosures – Woofers that are mounted in a free space will need special enclosures to make sure bass quality remains high.

There is more to speakers than meets the eye, or ears. Selecting the right kind can mean the difference between a ride that sings and one that falls flat.
