Your eyes are an important part of every day life. Could you imagine not being able to use them? Not being able to read a menu, look both ways crossing the street, watching a movie at the theater, driving your car, watching your kids recital or little league games. We often take advantage of what we really do enjoy seeing on a daily basis. There are so many people that do have poor vision, are severely vision impaired, or are legally blind. So why wouldn’t we want to protect our vision and prevent vision disabilities if we could?

The eye has several parts to it. The cornea is the front transparent window if you will of the eye, it focuses light into the eye. The iris is the colored part of the eye, it helps regulate the amount of light that enters the eye. The pupil is the dark center and it changes size in response to the various degrees of light to control the amount of light let into the eye. Lens is behind the iris and it focuses light rays into the retina. The retina is the nerve layer in the back of the eye, it senses light and creates impulses that are sent through the optic nerve to the brain. The optic nerve connects the eyes to the brain. The vitreous is the jelly like filling in the eye and the macula is the in the retina and it contains special light sensitive cells that allow us to see fine details.

Being aware of certain eye diseases can help you to recognize them sooner. A cataract is clouding of the eye lens and is the leading cause of low vision in America. Glaucoma causes damage to the optic nerve. Vision impairment is not evident until a significant amount of the nerve is damaged. Most people don’t even realize they have it till it’s too late. Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes complication where the blood vessels in the retina become blocked and damaged. Macular Degeneration is the hardening of the arteries in the eyes and it cuts off oxygen and nutrients to the eye damaging the retina.

Getting a regular eye exam is essential to making a difference in seeing or being vision impaired. An eye doctor can detect if there are any problems before you even notice signs of vision impairments. Going to the eye doctor can also let you know if you need glasses or if you have perfect 20/20 vision. Getting glasses can help prevent from straining your eye as much as well. Straining your eyes can make your vision worse.

Wearing sunglasses can protect the eyes just like sunscreen protects our skin from the harmful rays of the sun. You don’t have to look directly at the sun to get damage to your eyes from the sun. The rays of the sun can be reflected off many things like snow, pavement, water, sand, and glass. Sun damage to the eyes can create cataracts in the future as well as age related macular degeneration. Make sure that when you buy sunglasses that they are 100 percent UV protected. Buying and old sunglasses doesn’t cut it, the dark tint doesn’t protect against the suns UV rays.

Straining your eyes can damage them as well. It can cause eye pain, watery eyes, headaches, blurry vision, or double vision. There are some things you can do to prevent eye strain. Avoid sitting to close to the TV or the computer screen. Getting a glare filter or changing the monitor to face away from a direct light source shining on it. You can rest the muscles of your eyes by focusing on a distance object.

Not wearing safety goggles can cause some serious injuries to the eye or eyes that can cause blindness even. Any kind of chemical can be harmful to your eyes if you get any in them. Wearing goggles can protect them. In a work shop there is a lot of dust and wood or metal shaving that can get into your eyes and cause scratches, lawnmowers put up rocks and sticks that can fly in your eyes, and things like fireworks and even some sports that have fast balls can really damage your eyes.

Every one always says eating a lot of carrots will improve your vision, well not necessarily, it does give you the vitamins that you need for good vision but it wont change your vision. Vitamin A, E, C and zinc, selenium, and copper are really good vitamins for your vision. Supplements can help keep your eyes in good shape too. Like bilberry, it helps protect and strengthen capillaries and protect against eye diseases. Alterative Health Supplements has a few eye care products that will give your eyes the essential vitamins and minerals it needs to protect you eyes. One of these products is Forever Vision. It has bilberry and lutien in it along with lots of antioxidants to supplement your eyes and maintain good eye health.
