You might have just received the news about your big promotion. Now it requires you and your family to relocate to another city. You go home very excited to break the news. However, your children do not receive this as joyously. Do not worry because this is a normal reaction. What is important is you handle the situation delicately.

Breaking the News to Your Kids

Starting with the good news would be the best option. If you tell them about the big promotion first, they will be excited about it. Tell them about the benefits they will get because of the promotion. But don’t forget to tell them about the impending move.

When they hear about the move, expect the most adverse reaction from them. Instead of reacting adversely, try to understand them instead. Remember that their life consists not just of your family but of their own set of friends too. Leaving their friends whom they could have spent their entire lives with can be very difficult.

Remain calm and try to make them calm as well. Instead engage and encourage the kids to talk their concerns with you.

Doing the Talk

Do not rush the kids into talking right away. Let them get used to the idea of moving first. When they are ready, just be ready to talk as well. A lot of questions would be thrown at you for sure. They would want to know why your family has to move and leave the life you guys have. They would also ask when the big move is going to be. And then they would ask about everything else about the move.

The key is to be honest as possible. You can ask them about some of their fears and reassure them that everything will be fine in time. Once they are settled in they will also enjoy their life in the next city you are going to if they only give it a chance.

Make them feel that you understand their feelings. And then make them feel you are in it together. This will make them less alienated to you and to the idea of the move. Most often than not they will also warm up to it so you just have to be patient.

Keep Them Involved

Children also want to feel important so keep them involved. Give them assignments and make them help with the preparations for the move. Assign some chores on the day of the move too. This will keep them occupied and less worried about the move.

And when it is finally time to leave, give them time to say their goodbyes too. This will help them to cope up with their own stress and loneliness. Make sure that you deal with each child to avoid depression.

Relocating from one place to another is a very hard task. Don’t ever think that this is as easy as travelling in other countries. Remember, you will move everything from your old house. However, you don’t have to lose the excitement to meet new neighbors and stay in a new house just because relocating is difficult. As long as you plan your relocation properly and well, you don’t have to worry anything at all.
