Sleeplessness Doesn’t Have to Be a Problem Anymore

All people experience a night of sleeplessness at some point in there life. Not getting restful nights sleep can affect your everyday living. It will make you too tired to take care of those daily responsibilities or you will have trouble concentrating on work or other daily activities.

It is best to get 8 hours of rested sleep each night until age 60, and then 6 hours should be enough. It all depends on how you feel in the morning when you wake up. Some people may only need 4 hours while others may need 10 hours. Most don’t agree on one definition for insomnia since the specific number of hours a single person needs varies so much. Insomnia is a symptom not a disease or diagnosis. It means difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep. It could mean both as well in some cases.

Insomnia can affect people in every age bracket, infants to elderly. Sleeplessness in adults can be caused by aging, anxiety, depression, grief, stress, or excitement can all be causes of insomnia. Emotions can has a lot to do with how you sleep at night. Other causes include alcoholism, diseases, jet lag, shift changes at work, and too much stimulation at night. Some of the diseases that cause insomnia are restless leg syndrome, cystitis, arthritis, enlarged prostate, thyroid disease, lung problems, and heart problems. Insomnia in infants can be caused by hunger, fever, colic, indigestion, teething, and need for attention.

Changing some of you night time habits may help with insomnia. Try these things before using sedatives or going to a doctor. Keep a sleep log so you and your doctor can go over it if they don’t work. Avoid stressful situations before bedtime, set a regular bedtime and stick to it, avoid alcohol in the evening, drink warm milk or eat turkey before bed, exercise daily but not before bed, and try to relax by reading a book, taking a bath, or listening to soothing music before going to bed.

Try seeking counseling for any nightmare or dream issues that keep you awake or waken you in the night. Take the TV and the computer out of your bedroom, the brain gets used to the stimulation and can expect it if it is there. Try to keep the bedroom just for bedroom activities, and avoid staying in bed to long in the day and don’t go to bed if you are bored. And for children who can’t sleep stay out of there room at night, they may become dependant on the attention and need it to sleep. Don’t send them to bed as a punishment, make sure that is not noisy and don’t give them sleep aids with out doctor permission.

Sleeplessness and insomnia can cause a person to have dark circles under the eyes, reduced energy levels, fatigue, disorientation, irritability, and posture changes.
