To learn a language is an ideal opportunity to use memory techniques. In learning a foreign vocabulary, the use of word association will be very helpful and will make it easier and more interesting. Mnemonics is a method used to improve one's memory through the use of a set of letters or words to relate other words or ideas with each other. This technique can come in handy when associating unfamiliar foreign words and phrases common English words and phrases. The key in maximizing the benefits of this technique is to pick out as much words that are common to all languages as you can. Some of these words are What, Why, Where, Is, Are, etc.

Another technique you can use to learn a language is the translation method. This technique is used to put a foreign language in the perspective of your own native language. Translation should not be done per word, but rather it should be based on actual thoughts. This method is best used to expose inconsistencies in vocabulary, as well as weakness in sentence structuring. This is very effective for beginners especially those who belong to those who are more advanced in years.

Another technique used to learn a language is looking up foreign colloquial terms of idiomatic expressions. This technique is perfect for learning and mastering the English language and the same is true to most languages. Most conversations are filled with a lot of sentences that shouldn't be interpreted literally. People are prone to using anachronisms in their everyday conversations that do not necessarily mean the same in another language. This will come in handy especially when speaking with natives because they will not only understand you better but they will be able to relate to what you are trying to say. It is better if you can write down at least 10 foreign colloquial terms and its corresponding meaning in your own native language. Keep a journal containing these exercises until such time that you can actually write complete paragraphs containing common conversational sentences.

If you are to learn a language for the purpose of travel, whether it is for pleasure or business, it is best to start with words and sentences that are either descriptive or interrogative. Knowing the foreign equivalent of"Which way to the train station" and "Where is the nearest taxi/cab stand" will come in handy. It is also best to keep a pocket dictionary of the language you are trying to learn if you have to visit that particular country. While there, try picking up some simple words by listening intently to native speakers when they speak to you in their language.

If it is your intent to not only learn a language but become fluent in it, integrate the same to your everyday life. Listen to it, speak it, most importantly live it and make a part of who you are. Keep in mind that languages are much like cultures themselves; they are ought to be experienced and cherished sans prejudice to whatever you are used to.
